Fashion Design is focused on contextualising pattern making and construction, design development and fashion practice. Fashion Sustainability, on the other hand, is focused on systems thinking, materials innovation, fashion technology and its impact. This degree is for students who want to change how fashion works, not just create within it.
You can choose from two majors — Textile & Material Design and Fashion Innovation & Technology — and a range of minors. Fashion and textiles minors include Fashion Design, Fashion Enterprise, Textiles & Material Design, Materials Innovation, and Digital Fashion. Interdisciplinary minors include Digital Communication, Development & Social Equity, Entrepreneurship, Photography, Foundations in Sustainability, Regenerative Futures, and Artificial Intelligence in Practice. You can complete 3 minors, 1 major and 1 minor, 2 minors and 4 interdisciplinary subjects, or 1 major and 4 interdisciplinary subjects.
RMIT has extensive connections with the local, national and global fashion and textiles sector. As part of your studies, you will collaborate with industry and community partners in partnered projects, placements, virtual studios and case studies. Current partnered projects include Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), Bruck Textiles, and Melbourne & Olympic Parks. In your third year, you will work with an industry partner on a live sustainability challenge as part of the Fashion Sustainability Partnered Project, and also complete a self-directed capstone project.
Graduates can pursue roles such as fashion designer (average AU$93,000/year), textile designer (average AU$88,000/year), sustainability officer (average AU$103,000/year), product manager (average AU$135,000/year), and materials manager (average AU$185,000/year), according to Seek.com.au 2026. Other roles include digital fashion innovator, sustainable sourcing manager, corporate social responsibility (CSR) manager, fashion coder, and production manager.
In 2026, the annual student contribution amount for a Commonwealth Supported Place is between AU$4,738 and AU$17,399 depending on the band of subjects enrolled. The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is a maximum of AU$373 for 2026. International students are charged AU$47,040 annually (2026). Eligible students may apply for a HECS-HELP loan to defer tuition fees and SA-HELP to defer the SSAF. Repayment only begins once income exceeds the government's minimum threshold.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
