Course Overview
class="m-0 section-title__container anchorname" id="overview"> Overview Learn the full range of theoretical and practical aspects of food science, technology and nutrition science. The Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition has been designed to provide you with a foundational knowledge of the science of manufacturing food and making it safe and nutritious. You will learn how to develop novel, healthy and functional food products that meet consumer demands and comply with strict safety and health guidelines. As part of your studies, you will have the opportunity to major in food technology, nutrition, or both. The nutrition major focuses on human health and nutrition subjects, while the food technology major deals with traditional and novel technologies employed in the manufacturing of food products, as well as sensory evaluation of foods, product development and quality assurance. In this degree you will study in world-class laboratories and facilities. A significant amount of time will be spent in the laboratory and at RMIT's multi-million dollar Food Innovation and Research Centre, undertaking food production trials and development projects. The Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition culminates in capstone experiences which include work integrated learning activities, where you’ll apply your learning in a workplace (real or simulated) context and prepare for an exciting and challenging career in the food industry.

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition, you will have opportunities to pursue roles in a range of organisations in settings. From the food science and technology major, you may go to work for large food processing companies in research and development, marketing or quality assurance roles. Graduates of the nutrition science major work in community nutrition or for food companies in areas such as product development and regulatory affairs. RMIT graduates have had successful careers with major food companies such as: Nestlé Cadbury Simplot Heinz Mondelez. Common Questions
There are two majors available in this degree: Nutrition Science and Food Science & Technology. The nutrition major focuses on human health and nutrition subjects, while the food technology major deals with traditional and novel technologies employed in the manufacturing of food products, as well as sensory evaluation of foods, product development and quality assurance. You will have the opportunity to major in food technology, nutrition, or both.
At the Bundoora campus you will have access to specialised laboratories, modern facilities and the latest technologies. Facilities include a food pilot plant that simulates industrial production, a product development laboratory, a fully equipped computerised sensory and consumer evaluation suite, a food and nutrition research laboratory, a food analysis and characterisation laboratory, a microbiology laboratory, temperature-controlled rooms, and dry and wet goods storage and preparation areas. A significant amount of time will also be spent at RMIT's multi-million dollar Food Innovation and Research Centre, undertaking food production trials and development projects.
The majority of subjects in this degree are taught face-to-face at the Melbourne City campus for the first three semesters, and then at the Bundoora campus for the last three semesters. In Years 1 and 2, you will study basic science subjects such as chemistry, microbiology and mathematics at the City campus, before moving to Bundoora for more advanced food and nutrition sciences subjects conducted in modern laboratories and a pilot plant facility.
Yes. Graduates of this degree are eligible for membership with the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology and the Nutrition Society of Australia.
Yes. Recent graduates have spent time studying food science and technology in England, Ireland, Germany and other European countries. RMIT offers a range of opportunities for students to study abroad through overseas work, exchange and study experiences with over 165 partner universities worldwide. Additionally, the degree includes work integrated learning activities and industry site visits, with past students visiting companies such as Asahi and Edlyn Foods.
