About This Course

The Bachelor of Game Design and Development explores the fundamentals of game design, ideation and production, teaching students to transform ideas into playable experiences through creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving. The course is built on three core pillars - asset production, game ideation and design, and game project management - and develops advanced technical and artistic skills alongside a strong understanding of production pipelines, design principles and games culture. Throughout the course, students build professional communication, leadership and project management skills while developing a strong portfolio, creating games from the ground up through real industry experience, work-integrated learning, and a capstone project that culminates in a polished portfolio piece. Graduates leave with a thorough understanding of industry-standard tools, production processes, and promotion and networking, prepared to navigate the creative and business sides of a competitive global industry. Learning outcomes include sourcing, analysing and evaluating tools, information and assets for complex game development projects; demonstrating creativity and analytical skills to solve unpredictable problems; using industry-standard methods and tools to implement optimal solutions; communicating design ideas across diverse groups; and understanding the social, ethical and historical contexts of the games industry. The course includes 120 hours of experience through an internship or live brief.

As an official Unreal Academic Partner and PlayStation First Academic Development Partner, students gain access to industry-leading Unreal Engine tools and PlayStation 5 development kits used by top game studios. This AQF Level 7 course is delivered online, on campus or in blended mode across Sydney and online, over three years full-time, six years part-time, or two years accelerated.

General Requirements

Domestic students:

Australian secondary school certificate, or equivalent OR
Successful completion of a Vocational qualification (AQF Level 4), or above OR
Successful completion of at least 0.25 EFTSL at AQF level 6, 0.5 EFTSL at AQF level 5 or above, or equivalent OR
Work-life experience demonstrating the ability to undertake study at the required level, which may include approval of prior study or successful completion of a readiness assessment

International students:

Successful completion of at least 0.25 EFTSL at AQF level 6, 0.5 EFTSL at AQF level 5 or above, or equivalent OR
Australian secondary school certificate, or equivalent Senior Secondary qualification, or Baccalaureate Diploma
Academic IELTS 6.0 (no band less than 5.5) or equivalent OR
