Graduates can pursue roles such as GIS Officer, Spatial Scientist, GIS and Spatial Analyst, Remote Sensing Specialist, and Environmental Consultant across industries including environmental consulting, government environmental policy and regulation, mining, private sector, and NGOs/not-for-profits. You could also run your own spatial specialist consulting company.
Graduates can pursue an Honours in Geographical Sciences, which involves advanced analysis of spatial patterns and independent research. They are also eligible for advanced entry into four specialisations of the UWA Master of Environmental Science — Catchments and Water; Environmental Management; Marine and Coastal Management; or Sensing and Spatial Data Science — completing the degree in 18 months or 3 semesters. Entry to Environmental Rehabilitation or Environmental Economics specialisations is possible with an extra semester of study.
The degree features a Geographical and Spatial Science Extended Major, which can only be taken as a major in the Bachelor of Geographical and Spatial Science and Master of Environmental Science. Recommended minors include Data Science (Advanced Data Science area), Ecology (Conservation Biology and Ecological Restoration area), and Global Health (Population Health and Disease area).
The degree involves significant learning in the field, laboratory activities, acquisition of advanced spatial data, and fundamental problem-solving skills. Students can also participate in Work Integrated Learning (WIL) through science work placement and consultancy project units, as well as field trips around Western Australia and beyond through the Natural and Physical Sciences fieldwork program.
UWA is ranked 1st in Western Australia and 44th in the world for Environmental Sciences and Engineering (GRAS 2024/2025). Graduates with GIS and spatial data skills are in high demand and command a salary premium in the job market, and the degree offers the opportunity to specialise in spatial sciences leading to rewarding careers in the geographical sciences field.
