About This Course

Explore the global issues facing key regions and countries with La Trobe University's Bachelor of Global Studies.

In this degree, you will study international relations, geopolitics, contemporary security, American power, the rise of China, climate change, armed conflict, terrorism, and human rights.

Study fully online or at our Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus. You can shape your degree by choosing a major and minor with electives, or a double major with electives. Depending on your campus and study mode, you can choose from areas including international relations, conflict and negotiation, Asian politics and security, government and policy, human rights, sustainability and development, and language studies in Chinese, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, French, Greek and Spanish.

In second year, you will choose an industry placement or industry project. You will also be encouraged to build global experience through study at one of our overseas partner universities.

By studying the Bachelor of Global Studies, you will learn how to:

analyse the systems, structures, laws and practices that shape global issues
interpret political, social, legal and cultural perspectives on international challenges
evaluate international problems and formulate evidence-based responses
assess political systems, actors and processes at local, national and global levels
examine how global decisions affect communities and environments.

General Requirements

Domestic students:

Recent secondary education (Year 12)

This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection considerations.

VCE: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

Selection rank adjustments

VCE: A study score of 25 in Drama, any Humanities, Legal Studies, Psychology or Theatre Studies equals 4 aggregate points per study. A study score of 20 in any LOTE equals 4 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 12 points.

Higher education, VET and work/life experience applicants

Subject proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Additional selection information

You may satisfy the academic requirements by completing the STAT multiple choice if you:
- are not currently studying an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent)
- have no prior secondary school (Year 12), VET studies, HE studies or relevant work experience that can be considered for entry, or
- do not meet the minimum academic requirements for the program. Refer to the La Trobe University STAT page page for further information.
Applicants can complete and submit a Personal Statement if they wish other information to be considered during the selection process. This may include information such as work or community experience or reasons for applying. Applicants may wish to provide other documentation in support of their application.
Applicants who have undertaken studies in a language other than English must demonstrate that they have achieved the required minimum scores in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic) or equivalent. Applicants seeking consideration via Work Recognition must complete all requirements listed on the La Trobe University Work Recognition webpage and submit a Personal Statement, including relevant work experience and reasons for applying for this course.
