About This Course

Combine the clinical and business sides of healthcare and use data to make a difference to the quality of patient care with La Trobe's Bachelor of Health Information Management.

Develop a comprehensive skillset covering areas like anatomy and physiology, health classification, data analytics, health informatics and health systems management. Build foundations in your first year, then deepen your expertise throughout your degree, including 55 days of supervised professional placement with our prestigious health partners.

By studying La Trobe's Bachelor of Health Information Management, you will:

learn the language of medicine, understanding the fundamental structures of human anatomy and physiology and how they function.
develop skills in health informatics and data analysis, including how to implement and manage health information systems – such as security, access and integration requirements – and how to analyse, interpret and disseminate complex health data
build knowledge in health classification and the coding of complex clinical data so it can be used to inform and evaluate health services
investigate the ethical challenges and legal requirements of working with health data, including ways to ensure patients can control their health information.
graduate ready to apply for membership of the Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA).

General Requirements

Domestic students:

Recent secondary education (Year 12)

This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection considerations.

VCE: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.

HSC: One of English Standard, English Advanced (Band 3), English as an Additional Language or Dialect (Band 4).

Selection rank adjustments

VCE: A study score of 25 in Health And Human Development, any Mathematics, Physical Education or any Science equals 4 aggregate points per study. A study score of 20 in any LOTE equals 4 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 12 points.

HSC: Applicants who successfully complete one of the following HSC or equivalent Year 12 subjects will have their selection rank increased by one point per study: Performance Band 3 in any humanities, legal studies, or drama; Performance Band 2 in any language other than English. Overall, selection ranks can be increased by a maximum of five points.

Higher education, VET and work/life experience applicants

To be eligible for an offer of admission into the Bachelor of Health Information Management at La Trobe University, an applicant must:

Meet the stated criteria for Year 12 or Non Year 12 admission, OR
Successful completion of two of the following four Open Access Pathway subjects:
HBS1HBA- HUMAN BIOSCIENCES A
STM1001- MAKING SENSE OF DATA
HIM1HAU - HEALTHCARE IN AUSTRALIA
HIM1UDH - UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL HEALTH

Subject proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Additional selection information

You may satisfy the academic requirements by completing the STAT multiple choice if you:
- are not currently studying an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent)
- have no prior secondary school (Year 12), VET studies, HE studies or relevant work experience that can be considered for entry, or
- do not meet the minimum academic requirements for the program. Refer to the La Trobe University STAT page page for further information.
