To be considered for admission, you must have completed a bachelor degree or higher, or a major in a related discipline, with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65 in third year units (or final year units where relevant). You must also meet English language proficiency requirements, such as an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no band score less than 6.0, or a VCE English study score of at least 30 in EAL or 25 in any other English. Additionally, applicants must submit an honours project preference form as part of their application.
You can focus on a range of research themes within the health sciences, including community health, gambling, gender/family/reproductive and sexual health, health diversity and social inclusion, health economics, nature and health, obesity prevention and healthy food environments, food policy, physical activity and motor skill competence, refugee health, sustainability, and violence and abuse prevention and intervention.
To complete the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours), you must pass 8 credit points including a 0-credit-point compulsory unit (DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin) and 8 credit points of core units, which include 4 credit points of an independent research project. In Semester 1, you study Research Methods (HBS400) and Developing Research Skills (HSH401). In Semester 2, you undertake the Honours Research Project (HSH402). Full-time students study four credit points per semester.
No, the Semester 2 (June) intake is part-time only. The Semester 1 (February) intake is available for both full-time and part-time students at Burwood (Melbourne) and Online.
Completing the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) prepares you for careers requiring an advanced skill set, including roles such as community health development officer, community recreation officer, disability services advocacy and development, family and community support, food safety and development, health services management, health reform, policy and health promotion roles, program developer in physical health and nutrition, and officer for refugee advocacy. The degree also equips you with the research skills to pursue further postgraduate and research degrees.
