Bachelor of Human Rights

ACU's Bachelor of Human Rights helps prepare students to be one of the leading human rights advocates of the 21st century. Human rights is a rapidly growing area of multidisciplinary study that supports an expanding job market in the human rights sector, and this degree provides a deep understanding of human rights that is enriched by perspectives from law, philosophy and the humanities. Students apply their knowledge to practical professional contexts and complete a placement in the human rights sector through a 10 credit point community engagement unit, LHRG306. The course takes three years full-time or equivalent part-time and requires 240 credit points: 60 credit points of arts specified units, 50 credit points of laws specified units, 40 credit points of philosophy specified units, 60 credit points of electives, 20 credit points of ACU Core Curriculum and the community engagement unit. Study spans legal institutions and human rights, human rights and Indigenous people, human rights in history, Australian human rights law and policy, international humanitarian law, security, terrorism and human rights, introduction to ethics, and justice, authority and human rights. Students may take other electives relevant to their professional context with the approval of the Course Adviser. The degree is offered at ACU's Brisbane, Melbourne and Strathfield campuses, and can also be taken as a double degree with the Bachelor of Laws or the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice. A student who meets the requirements may exit with an Undergraduate Certificate in Liberal Arts or a Diploma in Liberal Arts. Graduates bring their multidisciplinary expertise in human rights to corporate, government and non-government settings.
