About This Course

The Bachelor of Information Technology provides graduates with the necessary skills to pursue a career in Information Technology. A foundation of programming, data, networking and cyber security provides a solid base for later study. The majors focus on important current areas of Information Technology. Any pair of majors can be taken as a double major combination. Electives and flexible unit choice allow the majors to be complemented by more Information Technology study or by units from other disciplines.

The emphasis in all majors is on concepts, insights and skills that enable graduates to use current technologies and to also evaluate and adapt to new technologies as they emerge. Central to the learning of the conceptual material is extensive practical experience where non-trivial problems are analysed, solutions designed and developed, both individually and in groups.

A final-year industry-based group project in the PACE/capstone unit brings everything together to solve a real world problem.

Networking: IT professionals who need to be able to plan, build, implement and manage complex ICT networks and communication systems.
Software Technology: IT professionals who need to design, develop, test and maintain software from first principles are needed everywhere.
Web and Mobile App Development: IT professionals who need to design and implement web and mobile applications, combining user experience design in its development processes.

What HSC subjects are required to gain entry into the Bachelor of Information Technology at Macquarie University?

To be eligible for academic entry, you need to have achieved a minimum Band 4 in either Software Design and Development or Information Processes and Technology, plus a minimum Band 4 (or equivalent) in a Mathematics subject (Advanced, Extension 1, or Extension 2), and a minimum Band 4 in an additional Category A or Extension subject not already used to satisfy another requirement.

Is HSC Mathematics required for entry into this degree?

Yes, mathematics is required. You must have completed one of the following: HSC Mathematics Advanced (minimum Band 4), HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (minimum E2), or HSC Mathematics Extension 2 (minimum E2).

Can I use the same subject to satisfy multiple entry requirements?

No. The additional subject requirement specifies that it must be a Category A or Extension subject that has not been used to satisfy another requirement, meaning each subject can only be counted once toward the entry criteria.

Does the Bachelor of Information Technology at Macquarie University accept HSC Extension subjects for entry?

Yes, HSC Extension subjects are accepted. For the technology requirement, Software Design and Development (Band 4) or Information Processes and Technology (Band 4) apply. For mathematics, Extension 1 (E2) or Extension 2 (E2) are accepted, and any unused Extension subject achieving E2 can satisfy the additional subject requirement.
