About This Course

The Bachelor of Information Technology is a three-year full-time (or part-time equivalent) course that enables students to acquire a broad and coherent knowledge of the key theories and practices that underpin the practice of Information Technology professionals, who operate in dynamic business contexts. While the BIT offers a broad focus on Information technology, covering programming, networking, security and data management, it has a coherent focus on Software Development and Cyber Security. Throughout the course, students will acquire knowledge and skills in the underlying principles, concepts and technical knowledge that inform the work of IT professionals as well as broader management principles. They will be able to apply their IT knowledge and skills to a range of industrial activities. They will develop a depth of knowledge in the areas database systems, networking, security and/or software development. They will develop a team based operational style. They will use IT to generate information and solve problems. They will be able to provide a professional level of advice on IT matters. This knowledge and these skills will be applied in a manner which is reinforced by ethical judgement and effective communication.

Domestic Applicants:

Successful completion of Year 12 and an ATAR score of 50 or above; or
Successful completion of an equivalent secondary qualification either interstate or overseas (in English or see below); or
Satisfactory completion of an accredited Tertiary Preparation Program or a Foundation Year Program offered by an Australian university that would enable students to gain entry to an Australian university; or
Satisfactory completion of one year of accredited full-time study at a registered institute of tertiary education at AQF level 4 or above; or
Admission to candidature for an undergraduate degree at an Australian University.

International Applicants:

Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate competency in the English language.
English proficiency can be demonstrated by providing proof of an IELTS overall test result of 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5) or equivalent English language test such as TOEFL or PTE.
Other acceptable evidence of English proficiency includes: Completion of secondary education/undergraduate degree via the medium of English; or
Successful completion of Year 12 secondary schooling in Australia (minimum of 1 school year to be completed in Australia within the last 2 years); or
Successful completion of an Australian qualification recognised as at least AQF Certificate IV (minimum period of study of 1 school year within the last 2 years); or
Successful completion of a Tertiary Studies Foundation Program (minimum period of study of 1 school year).
International students who do not meet the specified English proficiency requirements may undertake an ELICOS program prior to undertaking the course.

All Applicants:

All students (domestic and international) must be 18 years of age or over at the time that they commence the course for which they have applied.

As IT is a fundamental infrastructure, graduates of the CIHE BIT will be able to work in a range of workplace contexts and environments. A conceptual framework for information technology is likely to inform a much wider range of jobs, beyond the boundaries of the IT profession.

Is the Bachelor of Information Technology accredited by any professional body?

Yes, the Bachelor of Information Technology is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and recognised by the Seoul Accord, providing graduates with internationally recognised professional standing.

How many units and credit points do I need to complete the degree?

To fulfil the requirements of the award, students must complete a total of 240 credit points or 24 units. Each unit is 10 credit points, except BUS307 Work Integrated Learning, which is a 20-credit-point unit.

What are the English language requirements for international students?

Is there an internship or work-integrated learning option available in this course?

Yes, students have the option to complete BUS307 Work-Integrated Learning (Internship) as an elective. This unit is worth 20 credit points and requires a pre-requisite of 120 credit points completed. It can be taken in Semester 6 as one of the elective options.
