Individual Thesis and Design Project (Year 4 Capstone)
A capstone subject in final year where students pursue an individual thesis and design project based on accumulated skills and interests in design, theory, technology and communications. Final year work is celebrated through the public INDEX graduate exhibition.
Common Questions
This course is available as a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP). The annual student contribution (tuition fee) for a standard full-time year (96 credit points) is between AU$4,738 and AU$17,399, depending on the band of each enrolled course. For international students, the indicative annual fee is AU$48,000 (2026). Additional costs include the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of up to AU$373 for 2026, plus field trips, textbooks and equipment. Eligible domestic students may defer fees using a HECS-HELP loan.
Applicants must submit a selection task comprising three components: (1) An applicant statement outlining motivations and aspirations for studying interior design, including relevant experience (maximum 150 words); (2) A description of an inspiring interior encountered, such as an exhibition, museum, gallery, retail environment, airport, civic building or theatre production (maximum 150 words); and (3) A 10-page folio uploaded as a single PDF (1920 x 1080 pixels, max 20MB) including process works, reference images, and completed works. Use of AI tools such as ChatGPT to generate any content is strictly prohibited. For Semester 2, 2026, the selection task must be submitted by 17 July 2026.
Students in third and fourth year have the opportunity to undertake internships and gain valuable experience with leading design practices in Melbourne and internationally across the Indo-Pacific region. Local internship partners include Bates Smart, Design Office, National Gallery of Victoria, and Sibling Architecture. International partners include Hassell and Woods Bagot. Additionally, students engage in real-life projects with organisations such as ACMI, NGV, Abacus Learning Centre, Peter Mac Cancer Foundation and Westfield.
Students can participate in international travel studios that involve projects and workshops in locations such as Hong Kong, India, Argentina, Mexico, USA, Germany, Eastern Europe, South Korea and Morocco. In second and third year, students can develop design skills through overseas travel studios, and in third year, students may choose to study overseas for a full semester on exchange. The course also engages in an ongoing global dialogue through student and staff exchange and engagement with an international network of practitioners and academics.
Graduates of the Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) are eligible for membership of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA). The degree also participates in a local and global conversation through membership of the Interior Design/Interior Architecture Educators Association (IDEA) and the International Federation of Interior Architects and Interior Designers (IFI). Graduates may also be eligible for entry into an RMIT Postgraduate or Research degree.
Year 1 introduces students to concepts of interior design through courses in design and communications, history and theory, and technical studies. Years 2 and 3 integrate design studios with electives in technology, communications, specialisations, and history and theory; each semester practising professionals and academics offer studios and specialisations on timely topics, with opportunities for overseas travel studios and semester exchange in third year. Year 4 involves an individual thesis and design project based on accumulated skills in design, theory, technology and communications, culminating in the celebrated public INDEX graduate exhibition. Specialisations include residential design, furniture design, retail design, design for film and TV, design for theatre, exhibition and event design, model making, design publishing, lighting, materials, digital modelling and fabrication, projection mapping, digital video and website design.
