About This Course

The Bachelor of Interior Design (Residential) prepares students to tackle the big challenges of contemporary living. Alongside exploring fittings, fabrics and colours, the course tackles issues such as sustainability, homelessness, the ageing population, changing families and evolving gender roles, teaching students how materials, lighting and furniture can turn a space into a statement, and how to experiment with emerging technology such as AI and interactive audio-visual systems. Hands-on design practice sees students work across disciplines, master technical documentation and handle contracts. Learning outcomes include creating future-ready living solutions that embrace new technologies, working with 3D-modelling software to design residential environments, exploring the impact of joinery, materiality and finishes on client needs, and developing construction documentation to industry standards. Students undertake 120 hours of experience through an internship or a live brief.

The course benefits from a partnership with Vogue Australia offering internship, mentoring and scholarship opportunities, is recognised by the Design Institute of Australia, and includes a free Adobe Creative Cloud Pro licence for the duration of study and six months after graduation. Delivered online, on campus and in blended mode at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and online, the course runs three years full time or six years part time, at AQF Level 7, by Torrens University Australia Ltd trading as Billy Blue College of Design.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Domestic students:

Year 12 (Australian secondary school certificate) or equivalent OR
Successful completion of a Vocational qualification (AQF Level 4), or above OR
Successful completion of at least 0.25 EFTSL at AQF level 6, 0.5 EFTSL at AQF level 5 or above, or equivalent OR
Work life experience demonstrating the ability to undertake study at the required level, which may include approval of prior study or successful completion of a readiness assessment

International students:

Successful completion of at least 0.25 EFTSL at AQF level 6, 0.5 EFTSL at AQF level 5 or above, or equivalent OR
Australian secondary school certificate, or equivalent Senior Secondary qualification, or Baccalaureate Diploma AND
Academic IELTS 6.0 (no band less than 5.5) or equivalent OR
Alternative entry requirements may be available, which may include assessment and approval of prior study or successful completion of a readiness assessment (contact the International Admissions team for more information)
