Explore how language shapes communication, culture and global connection with La Trobe's Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics.
In this degree, you'll build proficiency in your chosen language while developing a deep understanding of how languages are structured, used and learned. You'll study key areas of linguistics, including phonetics, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, and examine how language varies across social and cultural contexts.
Alongside your language major, you'll have the flexibility to tailor your studies through electives or a minor, allowing you to explore additional languages – including Auslan – or complementary disciplines. You'll gain real-world experience through industry-based learning, applying your knowledge in professional settings while building in-demand skills. You may also have the opportunity to study abroad and immerse yourself in the language and culture you are studying.
By studying the Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics, you will:
build speaking, reading and writing skills in Chinese, French, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Japanese or Spanish
develop AI literacy, learning to use language technologies critically and ethically while understanding their limits in real-world communication
analyse how languages work – from sound systems and sentence structure to meaning, and how these vary across languages and contexts
explore how language is acquired and how it varies across cultures, communities and social groups
gain real-world experience and build in-demand skills through industry-based learning, completing an industry placement or industry project in your second year
graduate with intercultural knowledge and communication skills to work effectively across global and diverse professional contexts.

Domestic students:
Recent secondary education (Year 12)
This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection considerations.
VCE: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.
Selection rank adjustments
VCE: A study score of 25 in English Language, any Humanities or any Science equals 4 aggregate points per study. A study score of 20 in any LOTE equals 4 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 12 points.
HSC: Applicants who successfully complete one of the following HSC or equivalent Year 12 subjects will have their selection rank increased by one point per study: Performance Band 3 or more in any humanities subject, legal studies, psychology (VIC); any language other than English (Band 2). Overall, selection ranks can be increased by a maximum of five points.
Higher education, VET and work/life experience applicants
Subject proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Applicants who have undertaken studies in a language other than English must demonstrate that they have achieved the required minimum scores in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic) or equivalent. Refer to Language requirements for further information.
