About This Course

The Bachelor of Linguistics and Language Sciences provides students with an in-depth foundation in the skills and knowledge necessary in the diverse field of linguistics that can form the basis for future studies in a wide range of educational, applied or research related areas or to employment in workplaces that require those highly skilled in communication and language.

Students are given the opportunity to study human language in one of the most diverse Linguistics Departments in Australia with access to one of the best-equipped research and clinical environments in the world for linguistics, speech, hearing, language and cognitive science.. Students will learn how to analyse the structure of language from a range of perspectives including how we produce, perceive and understand spoken language. g. phonetics and syntax) and sociocultural perspectives. Some aspects of this degree focus on how language is represented in the brain, the relationship between language and society, and in children and adults learning a second or other language. Students may also select subjects that involve learning about speech and language disorders, or hearing and its disorders.

Linguistics is the systematic study of human language including its structure, use and applications in societies around the world.
Linguistics graduates are employed in a wide range of occupations that involve a detailed awareness and understanding of language and its use.

Linguists are essential in language revitalisation and educational programs; as lexicographers (dictionary makers); and as specialists in accessible communication and subtitling.
Many linguistics graduates are employed in speech and language technology, in research and in clinical support roles.
Occupations including teaching, journalism, broadcasting, dramatic arts, advertising, marketing and public relations benefit from a keen understanding of the relationship between language and society and the ability to successfully use language in beneficial ways.
A Linguistics degree also combines particularly well as a second degree with Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Education, English, Cognitive Science, Computing, Languages, International Relations, Media, Politics, Psychology, Engineering, Science, Commerce, Marketing, Medical Science, Policing and Counter Terrorism.
Linguistics students may also go onto further study in Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, Forensic Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Speech Technology, Editing and Publishing, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Translation and Interpreting, Applied Linguistics, and Linguistic Research.

What HSC subjects are required for entry into the Bachelor of Linguistics and Language Sciences?

To be eligible for academic entry, you need to meet requirements across three areas: an English subject (e.g. English Standard, Advanced, or Extension 1/2 at specified minimum bands), a Mathematics subject (e.g. Mathematics Standard 2, Advanced, or Extension 1/2 at specified minimum bands), and one additional Category A or Extension HSC subject at the required minimum band.

What is the minimum English band required for HSC entry?

For HSC entry, you need a minimum of Band 6 in English Standard, English as an Additional Language or Dialect, or English Advanced. If you completed English Extension 1 or Extension 2, a minimum of E3 is required.

What Mathematics results are accepted for entry into this course?

Accepted Mathematics subjects include Mathematics Standard 2 (minimum Band 5), Mathematics Advanced (minimum Band 5), Mathematics Extension 1 (minimum E2), and Mathematics Extension 2 (minimum E2).

Do I need a third HSC subject beyond English and Mathematics for entry?

Yes, in addition to the English and Mathematics requirements, you must also have achieved a minimum Band 5 in any other Category A HSC subject not already listed, or a minimum E2 in any other Extension subject not already listed.
