About This Course

Mathematics is the language of data and the basis for successful decision-making and problem-solving across all sectors and industries. Mathematical and statistical models help us analyse information and forecast results in economics, finance, medicine and industrial processes. This analysis helps governments and businesses understand the factors behind important decisions.

The Bachelor of Mathematics will teach you highly transferable skills in problem-solving, data analysis, probability and variability, modelling, logistics and logic. Throughout the degree, you will tackle authentic real-world problems drawn from industry, science and government which will prepare you for roles where quantitative skills and careful reasoning are essential.

The degree is flexible, allowing you to take subjects from other study areas that interest you. You can choose to major in Mathematics for a rigorous blend of pure and applied mathematics, or Statistics and Data Science to focus on extracting insight and meaning from data.

This degree features UOW's flexible structure, which gives you a foundation of core expertise, a major in the area that relates to your degree, alongside a flexible zone you can use to explore a second major, pick up two minors or explore electives across the university, all within a standard three-year timeline (or part-time equivalent).

Other opportunities include scholarships from corporate partners, summer scholarships and undergraduate research projects with academic staff, and access to programs offered by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) ACE Network.

Requirements

Prerequisites: Students must have studied the equivalent of NSW HSC Mathematics Standard 2 (minimum Band 2) to be admitted into this degree.
Assumed Knowledge: UOW assumes students will have studied any two units of English, or equivalent.
Recommended Studies: Ideally, students will have studied Mathematics Extension 1, or equivalent.
Minimum Selection Rank: The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is a Selection Rank of 75. Your Selection Rank is your ATAR or IB Combined Rank plus any adjustments you are eligible to receive.
Recent Secondary Education: Admission is based on ATAR or International Baccalaureate admissions score (IBAS). Other qualifications considered include GCE A-Levels, New Zealand NCEA Level 3, and overseas senior secondary qualifications comparable to Australian qualifications.
Higher Education Study: Applicants must have completed at least half a year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at a Bachelor's degree level or higher, in the areas of Natural and Physical Sciences, or Information Technology or Engineering.
Vocational Education and Training (VET): Applicants who have completed a minimum of an AQF Certificate IV in the areas of Natural and Physical Sciences, or Information Technology or Engineering will be considered.
Work and life experience: Admission to UOW is primarily based on academic qualifications, with work or life experience generally not considered.
English Language Proficiency: If English is not your first language, you must meet the University's English Language Requirements. Accepted international test results include IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, and OET for specific health-related courses.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: UOW's Woolyungah Indigenous Centre's Indigenous Admissions Program (IAP) offers an alternative pathway for Indigenous Australians aged 17 and over.
