Honours students have access to the University of Tasmania's Greenhill Observatory, located north of Hobart, which houses 50cm and 1.3m optical telescopes that can be used for astronomical observations and research.

Yes, students can continue their research by pursuing a PhD. For example, Morgan Febey plans to make her Honours thesis subject — the OY Carinae star system — the focus of her PhD, continuing within the University of Tasmania's physics department.

Due to its location in the southern hemisphere, the University of Tasmania and its Greenhill Observatory have a unique advantage in observing stellar objects located close to the south celestial pole, such as the OY Carinae binary star system, which is impossible to observe from most of the northern hemisphere.
