About This Course

Be the scientist behind the fight against cancer. Nuclear medicine graduates from the University of Newcastle are highly sought after and typically secure employment quickly. In a field where demand continues to grow, this is not a generalist imaging degree. It is a specialist pathway where diagnostics meets treatment, combining advanced medical imaging, radiopharmaceutical science, and patient-centred care.

As a Nuclear Medicine Scientist, you won’t just image disease – you’ll help diagnose and treat cancer using radioactive substances. This will directly improve patient outcomes and give people the best possible chance of living full, healthy lives. You’ll learn how to perform advanced nuclear medicine scans using radiopharmaceuticals, working with specialised equipment to track how these substances move through the body. These techniques allow early detection of disease or injury, and in oncology settings, directly inform treatment decisions. You’ll gain hands-on experience with leading technologies through clinical placements and within our world-class, purpose-built health sciences precinct. This includes nuclear medicine image processing software, a CT laboratory, and the Southern Hemisphere’s largest University-based radiopharmacy laboratory. When you graduate, you won’t just be qualified – you’ll be specialised. You’ll have the confidence, competence, and real-world experience required for professional practice as a Nuclear Medicine Scientist, ready to step directly into an essential role in healthcare. Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme.
