Foundations of Medicine 1
Gives students a framework on which to base their undergraduate medical studies, including the structural and functional organisation of the human body, beginning with the study of biomolecules and cells, the classification and types of disease.
Foundations of Medicine 2
Describes the normal structure and function of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, common musculoskeletal and rheumatological diseases, antimicrobial and antiviral therapies, and laboratory diagnosis of infectious disease.
Fundamentals of Clinical Science 1
Focuses on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems; basic medical sciences are taught in parallel with clinically focussed material including population health, health systems, ethics and professionalism.
Fundamentals of Clinical Science 2
Builds on preceding units by introducing the student to the gastrointestinal, renal, and reproductive systems, exploring clinical conditions associated with these systems and relevant basic medical sciences.
Fundamentals of Clinical Science 3
Continues medical science teaching and introduces clinical rotations in hospital and community settings; includes neuroscience, anatomy, endocrinology and pathology.
Functional Clinical Practice
Strengthens the foundations for healthcare practice through a clinical lecture series focusing on multisystem health problems, including metabolic disorders and immune system conditions, as well as areas of specialised interest in clinical medicine.
Medicine Year 4A
An integrated Clinical Placement unit where students are placed in a range of clinical placements; learning outcomes are organised to deliver the Australian Medical Council (AMC) medical graduate outcomes.
Medicine Year 4B
An integrated Clinical Placement unit alongside Unit 4A where students are placed in a range of clinical placements; learning outcomes are organised to deliver the AMC medical graduate outcomes.
Medicine Year 5A
An integrated Clinical Placement year where students are placed in a range of clinical attachments; learning outcomes are organised to deliver the Australian Medical Council medical student outcomes.

Common Questions
The course is divided into a Bachelor of Medical Science (300 credit points over Years 1–3) and a Doctor of Medicine (200 credit points over Years 4–5). During Years 1 and 2, studies take place on campus with some patient contact at healthcare settings. Year 3 introduces clinical rotations in hospital and community settings. From Years 3 to 5, students are based at clinical schools in Hobart, Launceston, or the Rural Clinical School in Burnie, undertaking extensive clinical placements in areas such as general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, emergency, and aged care.
Yes. The University of Tasmania BMedScMD has a quota of 50% domestic rural students from MM2-7 locations, including 25% from MM3-7 locations. Applicants who have lived in a Modified Monash Model (MM 2-7) rural area of Australia for 5 consecutive years or 10 cumulative years may be eligible to have their application considered under the Rural Quota.
Graduates are eligible to apply for provisional registration to undertake training in an approved hospital as an intern. Upon successful completion of internship, they can apply for general registration as a Medical Practitioner in Australia and New Zealand. Specialisation options include general practice, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, pathology, anaesthesia, radiology, and psychiatry. Graduates may also pursue careers as medical administrators or in academic roles involving teaching and medical research.
From 2026, the Medicine Program will be offered at Cradle Coast, Launceston, and Hobart campuses. Applications open 1st August 2025 and close 11:59 pm 30th September 2025 AEST. Applicants who meet the entry requirements are ranked and offers are made separately to each campus based on the number of places available at each location. Application closing dates are strictly applied and late applications will not be accepted.
Yes, the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine course is accredited by the Australian Medical Council. Upon completing the degree and a subsequent internship at an approved hospital, graduates can apply for general registration as a Medical Practitioner in Australia and New Zealand.
