About This Course

This is a prestigious program in medical research for high-achieving students who are currently undertaking, or have completed, a relevant undergraduate medical degree. Students undertake research methodology training and carry out an independent research project on their selected topic, working closely with a supervisor who provides individual guidance and academic counselling. The course offers a pathway to higher level research in medicine. Note: this course is not a pathway to becoming a doctor — students seeking that path should refer to the Doctor of Medicine program (M6011).

General Requirements

International:

Applicants must meet one of the following: (a) currently enrolled with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 60% (Monash credit average) having completed 3+ years of the Direct entry Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at Monash, or 2+ years of the Graduate entry Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at Monash; (b) currently enrolled in a national or international medical degree accredited by an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), having completed study equivalent to at least 3 years of the Monash undergraduate-entry program with equivalent curriculum, learning outcomes and academic standards; (c) graduated with a WFME-accredited medical degree with a WAM of at least 60%; or (d) at least two years of clinical training after graduation from their medical degree.
English entry requirements (Level C): IELTS (Academic) overall 7.0, minimum band scores Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5, Speaking 6.5; or PTE (Academic) overall 65, minimum scores Listening/Reading/Speaking 58, Writing 58; or TOEFL iBT overall 94, minimum scores Reading 19, Listening 20, Speaking 20, Writing 24 (or equivalent approved English test).
Special requirement: students must meet "fitness for practice and professionalism" expectations, assessed as part of all units in the course (per the Professional Standards, Ethical Behaviour and Student Support (ProFESS) framework); not meeting these can require repeating a unit or, in some circumstances, exclusion from the course.
Work component: 36 hours/week (research project placement).
Alternative entry pathways are available for applicants who don't meet the direct entry requirements.

Domestic:

Same academic pathway criteria (WAM 60%+, WFME accreditation, or clinical training equivalence) and fitness for practice requirement as international applicants; no separate English test score is required for domestic students.
