Common Questions
Students can specialise in areas such as Astrophysics. For example, Honours students can study optical astronomy and pursue research into topics like close contact binary star systems using the University's Greenhill Observatory facilities.
Physics Honours students have access to the University of Tasmania's Greenhill Observatory, located north of Hobart, which houses 50cm and 1.3m optical telescopes that can be used for astronomical observations and measurements.
Yes, completing the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physics can serve as a pathway to a PhD. For instance, student Morgan Febey plans to continue her research into the OY Carinae star system by making it the subject of her PhD within the University of Tasmania's physics department.
During the Bachelor of Science degree, students typically major in mathematics and physics. In second and third years, students can study every astrophysics unit available before progressing to the Honours year, where they undertake a specialised research thesis.
Physics Honours students at the University of Tasmania receive support from mentors and teachers within the department. Students have noted the sheer enthusiasm of the physics teachers and the incredible support from mentors, alongside an active research environment where new work is regularly published.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
