Performance Major 1
Students demonstrate progressive understanding of technique and artistic expression on their chosen instrument (including voice) through private lessons and a Performance Practice class (masterclasses, workshops and seminars). An additional weekly Aural Skills class further develops skills acquired in their first year of study.
Music Specialisation Electives 1 & 2
Choose two modules from AIM's range of music specialisation electives to broaden your skills and explore areas of the industry beyond your major. Available streams include Music Business, Composition, Creative Technology, Performance, and Acting (Sydney only).
Introduction to Higher Education Studies
This unit introduces students to communication, academic integrity, presentation, and self-directed learning at a tertiary level, developing academic writing and spoken presentation skills, including essay technique, referencing, and scholarly research practices.
Music Materials 1
This unit introduces students to the materials from which music is made, including pitch, rhythm and harmony, examining how various elements of music are structured and notated in different genres and developing skills in interpreting music notation.
Performance Major 2
Building on Performance Major 1, students refine their understanding of the relationship between content and form, style and genre through private lessons and Performance Practice classes, with repertoire significantly more challenging technically and stylistically.
Collaboration Project 1
This is an industry-focused collaborative project, offering students the opportunity to apply theoretical and technical knowledge and skills in a practical context by participating in the design and production of a musical work within or across disciplinary boundaries.
Arts Meets Commerce: An Overview of the Arts and Entertainment Industry
This unit provides a broad and holistic overview of the Music Business. Investigating numerous sectors of the business, the unit explores the history, function, role, and key activities of each.
Music Materials 2
This unit builds from BMAS1 to further develop students' musicianship skills, aural appreciation of music and understanding of musical structures.
Performance Major 3
Extending from Performance Major 2, Performance Major 3 culminates in a public recital at the conclusion of the term. Students continue to refine stylistically appropriate performance, technical and sight-reading skills, and learn to construct a balanced recital program.
Collaboration Project 2
This is an industry-focused collaborative project, offering students the opportunity to apply theoretical and technical knowledge and skills in a practical context by participating in the design and production of a musical work within or across disciplinary boundaries.
Scholarship Unit – Musicology
Select one Musicology unit from a diverse range of topics designed to broaden your musical knowledge and critical thinking. Available topics span Western Art Music, Popular Music, Jazz, Screen Music, Game Music, and beyond.
Elective
Explore your interests through a choice of electives spanning AIM's course areas. This unit allows you to tailor your learning, build new skills, and broaden your creative and industry knowledge.
Performance Major 4
In Performance Major 4, students further refine their understanding of stylistically appropriate performance, further develop their technical and sight-reading skills, and continue to be reflective musicians who are able to critique both their own work and the work of others in a constructive and meaningful way.
Music Specialisation Modules 3 & 4
Choose two modules from AIM's range of music specialisation electives to broaden your skills and explore areas of the industry beyond your major. Available streams include Arts Management, Composition, Creative Technology, Performance, and Acting (Sydney only).
Performance Major 5
Extending from Performance Major 4, Performance Major 5 is the penultimate performance unit in the BMus Performance program, preparing students for their Capstone Project by allowing them to experiment with different stylistic performance techniques whilst still being aware of the nature of the reflective process as artists.
Collaboration Project 3
Students commencing BMCP3 continue their industry-focused collaboration studies, applying theoretical and technical knowledge acquired in other units to design and produce a musical work within or across disciplinary boundaries.
Capstone Project
In this unit, students in their final trimester of the Bachelor of Music demonstrate their artistic identity and professional readiness. Whether a solo recital, a chamber concert, or a portfolio of original compositions, the capstone demonstrates your artistic identity and professional readiness.
Common Questions
The classical pathway offers majors in Piano, Voice, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Trumpet, Flute, and Clarinet. If your instrument is not listed, AIM states they are committed to supporting a wide range of musicians and will work with you to find the right fit, so you are encouraged to contact their Future Students Team with your enquiry.
Domestic students complete the course in 6 study periods (2 years full-time) or part-time equivalent. International students complete 9 Study Periods (3 years) full-time. Intakes are available in February, May, and September.
The indicative total course fee for domestic students is $75,600, and for international students it is $85,680. Fees are indicative only and subject to change. FEE-HELP is available for eligible domestic students.
Domestic applicants are required to attend an interview or live audition and provide a portfolio of two live or recorded music performances. More details about auditioning at AIM are available on their website.
The Capstone Project (BMMS8, 12CP) is completed in the final trimester of the degree. Whether a solo recital, a chamber concert, or a portfolio of original compositions, the capstone demonstrates the student's artistic identity and professional readiness.
