Composition Major 1 – Innovation
This unit introduces innovative strategies in music composition, challenging you to explore new approaches to musical materials, original design, and project management. Through weekly lectures, seminars, and tutorials, you'll develop and apply an innovative compositional system of your choosing before bringing it all together in a 10-minute production portfolio.

Introduction to Higher Education Studies
This unit introduces students to communication, academic integrity, presentation, and self-directed learning at a tertiary level, developing academic writing and spoken presentation skills, including essay technique, referencing, and scholarly research practices.
Music Materials 1
This unit introduces students to the materials from which music is made, including pitch, rhythm and harmony, examining how various elements of music are structured and notated in different genres and developing skills in interpreting music notation.
Composition Major 2 – Arrangement
Extending from Composition Major 1, this unit introduces students to advanced strategies in music composition and production. Students learn systems in melody, harmony, rhythm, sequencing, and form to develop a creative practice in a series of practical exercises.
Collaboration Project 1
This is an industry-focused collaborative project, offering students the opportunity to apply theoretical and technical knowledge and skills in a practical context by participating in the design and production of a musical work within or across disciplinary boundaries.
Art Meets Commerce: An Overview of the Arts and Entertainment Industry
This unit provides a broad and holistic overview of the Music Business. Investigating numerous sectors of the business, the unit explores the history, function, role, and key activities of each.
Music Materials 2
This unit builds from BMAS1 to further develop students' musicianship skills, aural appreciation of music and understanding of musical structures.
Composition Major 3 – Other Media
Building on prior compositional study, this unit develops techniques for creating music across film, dance, theatre, and other media, exploring how music functions in support of broader artistic works. Students also develop practical skills in reading scores, cue sheets, and other visual representations of music.
Collaboration Project 2
This is an industry-focused collaborative project, offering students the opportunity to apply theoretical and technical knowledge and skills in a practical context by participating in the design and production of a musical work within or across disciplinary boundaries.
Scholarship Unit – Musicology (Trimester 3)

This unit challenges students to work at scale by developing creative problem-solving skills through a large-scale composition project. Students produce a portfolio featuring a major compositional, multi-disciplinary, or intermedia system, while also building critical listening skills for evaluating extended works.

Students continue their industry-focused collaboration studies, applying theoretical and technical knowledge acquired in other units to design and produce a musical work within or across disciplinary boundaries.

Bachelor of Music Capstone Project
In this unit, students in their final trimester of the Bachelor of Music degree will have the opportunity to propose and create a major work in their specialisation. This could include, but not be limited to: a live recital, a portfolio of compositions, a recording, an extended essay, or a multimedia presentation.
Collaboration Project 4
Students continue their industry-focused collaboration studies, applying theoretical and technical knowledge acquired in other units to design and produce a musical work within or across disciplinary boundaries.

Arts Management Module 1 – Engaging the Creative Mind and Commerce
This unit provides an overview and exploration into the creative mind and how it engages with key commercial touch points in the arts & entertainment industries.
Common Questions
Applicants are required to attend an interview or live audition (domestic) or an interview (international) and provide a portfolio of two contrasting pieces. More information about auditioning at AIM is available on the AIM audition requirements page.
Domestic students can complete the course in 6 study periods (2 years full-time) or part-time equivalent. International students must complete the course full-time over 9 study periods (3 years).
The indicative total course fee for domestic students is $75,600, and for international students it is $85,680. Fees are indicative only and are subject to change. FEE-HELP is available for eligible domestic students.
The Bachelor of Music (Composition) takes you through composition theory, arranging, orchestration, and soundtrack creation, building the technical range and creative depth to compose confidently across film, television, video games, and digital media. The course also includes industry-focused collaboration projects, musicology scholarship units, and a final Capstone Project.
The course is available with intakes in February, May, and September each year, and is delivered face to face with some online components at AIM's Melbourne and Sydney campuses.
