Common Questions
You can choose a study focus in performance, composition, contemporary music practice, or musicology, alongside specific music education and pedagogical training. Note that students commencing in Semester 2 are restricted to Classical performance, Historical performance, and Musicology specialisations.
There are three steps: Step 1 is to apply to the University of Sydney through UAC (domestic) or directly (international) to receive a University application number. Step 2 is to register for your audition and/or interview via the Acceptd portal, where you will enter your application number, select your degree and program, schedule your audition timeslot, upload required files, and pay the USD $30 audition registration fee. Step 3 is to prepare for your audition using the Undergraduate Audition Guide available for download.
Yes. In addition to the standard audition or portfolio requirement for your chosen specialisation, all Bachelor of Music (Music Education) applicants must undertake a short interview to discuss their aspirations for a career in teaching. For example, an applicant in the Composition specialisation will need to complete both the Composition portfolio/interview and a separate interview about their teaching interests.
Auditions and interviews are held twice a year during the NSW school holidays in July and September. Applicants choose which round they wish to audition in, though a select group of program areas are held only in the September round. Applicants are advised they will not be disadvantaged by choosing one round over the other, but auditioning in July may free up time around the HSC or other study commitments.
The Bachelor of Music (Music Education) develops your teaching skills through studies in education, music education, choral and instrumental pedagogy, and music technology. You will also study music teaching methods, music history and analysis, performance and compositional skills, attain information and communication technology competencies, and develop an understanding of children with special educational needs.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
