Module – Performance 1 & Acting Specialisation Module
Students develop acting skills through group instruction in masterclasses, workshops, seminars. Students experience the core principles and skills of contemporary acting technique(s) and position acting within a socio-cultural context, and reflect on their learning process as actors.
Collaboration Project 1 Industry Studies
An industry-focused collaborative project offering students the opportunity to apply theoretical and technical knowledge and skills in a practical context by participating in the design and production of a musical work within or across disciplinary boundaries.
Introduction to Higher Education Studies
Introduces students to communication, academic integrity, presentation, and self-directed learning at a tertiary level, developing academic writing and spoken presentation skills including essay technique, referencing, and scholarly research practices.
Collaboration Project 1 Industry Studies (Trimester 2)
An industry focused collaborative project offering students the opportunity to apply theoretical and technical knowledge and skills in a practical context by participating in the design and production of a musical work within or across disciplinary boundaries.
Arts meets Commerce: an overview of the Arts and Entertainment Industry
Provides a broad and holistic overview of the Music Business, investigating numerous sectors of the business, exploring the history, function, role, and key activities of each, and forward focused analysis of music business trends.
Music Materials 1
Introduces students to the materials from which music is made, including pitch, rhythm and harmony, examining how various elements of music are structured and notated in different genres and developing skills in interpreting music notation.
Module – Performance 2 & Acting Specialisation Module 2
Extending from Performance Module 1, this unit allows students to further develop vocal performance skills, growing in technical and expressive fluency through both private instruction and a weekly Performance Practice class.
Music Materials 2
Builds from BMAS1 to further develop students' musicianship skills, aural appreciation of music and understanding of musical structures. Online modules allow students to explore notation principles in different genres and to develop arrangement skills.
Performance Skills 1 – The Singing Actor 1
Provides opportunities for students to solidify their acting skills and vocal/singing technique through individual lessons, masterclasses, workshops and seminars, performing the core principles of contemporary acting and positioning their personalised acting within a socio-cultural context.
Book Musicals
Introduces students to the history, repertoire and analysis of musical theatre. Through sequenced readings, listening assignments and viewing recorded productions, students solidify their understanding of the sub-genres within the field and understand the social, historical, artistic and political contexts surrounding the genre.
Dance 1 (Elective)
The first in a series of three dance units, providing opportunities for students to develop skills that engage dance as a tool of expression, increasing co-ordination and rhythm and developing impulse and spontaneity work, with student-led choreography stylistically specific to Music Theatre genres.
Performance Skills 2 – The Singing Actor 2
Provides opportunities for students to understand the anatomy, safety and management of their voice and body in performance in an integrated manner and develops the fundamentals of vocal and physical skills and technique through participation in masterclasses, workshops, and seminars.
Collaboration Project 3 Industry Studies
An industry focussed collaborative project focusing on the collaborative process of formal rehearsals for a public season of a music theatre work under professional direction, offering students the opportunity to apply skills and techniques from specialisation units in a para-professional context.
Movement and Voice 1
Provides opportunities for students to understand the anatomy, safety and management of their voice and body in performance in an integrated manner and develops the fundamentals of vocal and physical skills and technique through participation in masterclasses, workshops, and seminars.
Performance Skills 3 – The Singing Actor 3
Building upon BMTPS2, this unit provides opportunities for students to solidify their acting skills and vocal/singing technique through individual lessons, masterclasses, workshops, and seminars, performing the core principles of contemporary acting and positioning their personalised acting within a socio-cultural context.
Dance 2
The second in a series of three dance units, providing opportunities for students to develop skills that engage dance as a tool of expression, increasing co-ordination and rhythm and developing impulse and spontaneity work, with student-led choreography stylistically specific to Music Theatre genres.
Performance Skills 4 – The Singing Actor 4
Building upon BMTPS3, this unit provides opportunities for students to affirm their acting skills and vocal/singing technique through individual lessons, masterclasses, workshops, and seminars, performing specific principles of stylistic acting technique(s) and interrogating their personalised acting within a sociohistorical-cultural context.

The Bachelor of Music Theatre is offered at both the Melbourne and Sydney campuses of the Australian Institute of Music.
For domestic students, the indicative total course fee is $75,600, with Study Period 1 at $9,126, Study Period 2 at $9,126, and Study Period 3 at $6,084 per year. For international students, the indicative total course fee is $85,680, with Study Period 1 at $10,710, Study Period 2 at $10,710, and Study Period 3 at $7,140 per year. FEE-HELP is available for eligible domestic students. Fees are indicative only and subject to change.
Domestic applicants are required to attend a live audition and provide a portfolio of two contrasting pieces. International applicants are required to attend an interview and provide a portfolio of two contrasting pieces. More information about auditioning at AIM is available on their website.
You will build the 'triple skill set' – singing, dancing and acting – and learn how to form a healthy practice routine by understanding the psychology of performance. You will receive one-on-one time with AIM experts to support your individual development, and engage in collaborative projects and live performances to gain real-world experience.
The Bachelor of Music Theatre is a 3-year full-time course comprising 9 Study Periods, with intake in February only. For Study Period 1 in 2027, Week 1 runs from 9 February to 13 February.
