About This Course

If nursing is your calling, this degree will provide you with both the theory and clinical skills to realise your ambition. Western's Bachelor of Nursing uses a primary healthcare framework for teaching, which means your study will combine inquiry-based learning and evidence-based practice. Our nursing degree also shows you how to apply physical and behavioural sciences to nursing, while you explore the best ways in which to care for individuals, families, and groups from diverse backgrounds. Develop your clinical skills in one of our innovative clinical practice units, located at four of our campuses, and benefit from our strong partnerships with local health districts in Greater Western Sydney. Over the course of your degree, you will also be placed in a range of real-world health and community settings, including aged-care facilities, hospitals, GP practices, and community health teams.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Eligibility for admission is based upon a completed Australian Year 12 qualification or equivalent.
Applications from Australian and New Zealand citizens and holders of permanent resident visas apply for admission directly through the WSU Online portal.
All applicants must meet English Language Proficiency requirements in one of the following ways:
- English is your primary language and you have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America), including at least two years between years 7 and 12.
- You currently hold registration as an Enrolled Nurse (Division 2), or Registered Nurse (Division 1) or Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
- If neither of the above applies, you will need to undertake an English language proficiency test.
National Criminal History Check: students must have a current check valid for their entire program. Must be an Australia-wide check, include the student's full name matching their Student ID card and date of birth, and not have any offences listed. If a student has a criminal history identified, they must provide a clearance or authority document or conditional letter from their relevant authorised state organisation.
A Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance letter or state equivalent, valid for their entire course.
A current approved first aid certificate valid for their entire course (approved provider courses can be found at http://training.gov.au).
A completed vaccination/immunisation card with all serology results attached — currency must be maintained by the student for their entire course.
Undertaking/Declaration form (or state equivalent documents).
Additional forms as required per state related to, but not limited to, Tuberculosis Assessment tool, Hepatitis B statutory declaration form, Signed Code of Conduct, Student Deed Poll and all other state equivalent documents as required.
In clinical placement subjects, students must wear the Western Sydney University nursing and midwifery uniform (purchased at the student's expense).
Online study is only available to domestic students.

Is the Bachelor of Nursing Online available to international students?

No. Online study for the Bachelor of Nursing is only available to domestic students (Australian and New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, or holders of permanent humanitarian visas). International students on a Student Visa cannot enrol in the online mode.

Is the Bachelor of Nursing accredited, and what can I do after graduating?

Yes. This degree has accreditation and approval from the Nurses and Midwives Board Australia. Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a registered nurse in Australia.

Throughout your Nursing degree, you gain practical experience in four to six week blocks across various hospital and community settings, meaning you will graduate with a minimum of eight hundred hours of professional experience placement over three years. Settings include aged-care facilities, hospitals, GP practices, and community health teams.

What are the special requirements I need to meet before going on clinical placement?

To attend a health-related placement, students must provide: a current National Criminal History Check valid for their entire program; a Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance letter or state equivalent; a current approved first aid certificate; a completed vaccination/immunisation card with all serology results attached; an Undertaking/Declaration form; and additional state-required documents such as a Tuberculosis Assessment tool, Hepatitis B statutory declaration form, Signed Code of Conduct, and Student Deed Poll. Students must also wear the Western Sydney University nursing and midwifery uniform during clinical placement subjects.
