About This Course

Our Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced Studies) is an undergraduate coursework degree that will prepare you with the knowledge and skills to work as a registered nurse who delivers culturally safe and person-centred healthcare. The advanced studies curriculum includes a focus on leadership, evidence-based practice and critical decision-making, and enhanced understanding of the local and global health environment. These foci consequently develop your capabilities as engaged, enquiring, locally and globally aware health care professionals. You will complete a prescribed course of study focusing on culturally safe and person-centred nursing practice across the lifespan with people from diverse cultures and contexts and will complete professional experience placement in private and public health facilities including speciality areas such as mental health, community health and high acuity settings. The course is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council and graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia on completion.

Applicants who are registered as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia are not eligible to apply for this course.
English language requirements must be met. Applicants must accept one of the following three declarations:
Declaration 1 – English as Primary Language: English is your primary language, and before the course start date, you will have attended and successfully completed at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English — including at least two years in secondary school (between years 7 and 12) — in a recognised country.
Declaration 2 – English Language Tests (taken on or after 23 April 2026): One of the following tests must be completed within two years of course commencement:
- IELTS (academic module): minimum overall score of 7 and minimum score of 7 in each component (listening, reading, writing, speaking)
- PTE Academic: minimum overall score of 72; minimum 72 for listening, reading and writing; minimum 76 for speaking
- TOEFL iBT: minimum total score of 96; minimum 23 for listening, 23 for reading, 25 for writing, 24 for speaking
Declaration 3 – English Language Tests (taken on or prior to 22 April 2026): One of the following tests must be completed within two years of course commencement:
- IELTS (academic module): minimum overall score of 7 and minimum score of 7 in each component (listening, reading, writing, speaking)
- PTE Academic: minimum overall score of 72 and minimum score of 72 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking)
- TOEFL iBT: minimum total score of 96; minimum 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 25 for writing, 23 for speaking
Direct applicants must complete and submit an English language declaration form as part of their application.

Is this course accredited and will I be able to register as a nurse after graduating?

Yes. The course is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) and graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia on completion.

What are the English language requirements for this course?

Applicants must satisfy one of three declarations: (1) English as a primary language with at least six years of education taught solely in English including at least two years of secondary school in a recognised country; (2) for tests taken on or after 23 April 2026 — IELTS 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each band, PTE Academic 72 overall (76 for speaking), or TOEFL iBT 96 total with specified minimums; or (3) for tests taken on or prior to 22 April 2026 — IELTS 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each band, PTE Academic 72 overall and 72 in each skill, or TOEFL iBT 96 total with specified minimums. All tests must be completed within two years of course commencement.

When are the application closing dates for this course?

The closing date for Semester 1 intake is 31 January of the commencing year, and the closing date for Semester 2 intake is 15 July of the commencing year. Separate deadlines apply for scholarship applications.

Am I eligible to apply if I am already a registered nurse?

No. Applicants who are registered as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia are not eligible to apply for this course.

Are there any financial support options available for domestic students?

Yes. Domestic students may be eligible for the NSW Health Tertiary Health Study Subsidy Program. Information on how to apply is available through the University of Sydney.
