In Australia, all dietitians are nutritionists, but only dietitians can provide medical nutritional therapy to individual patients. Graduates of this degree will hold both qualifications. Professional placements In the final stage of your degree, you'll complete over 20 weeks (100+ days) of full-time professional placements across Queensland and/or interstate. Professional recognition Graduates will be eligible to become Dietitians Australia (DA) members with dietetic qualifications and to apply to join the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) program. Attendance information The program is offered full-time and on-campus. Trimester 2 Intake If you commence in Trimester 2 you will be required to undertake core courses in Trimester 3 in the first year of the program. Professional Placement You must be available full-time to attend professional practice education placement activities in Years 3 and 4. If you are an International student on a student visa, you must ensure that you enrol in a way that will allow you to complete your enrolment within the expected program duration as stated on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). The recommended study load for international student in each compulsory trimester is 40CP. Managing Study Interruptions Leave of Absence Taking a leave of absence from this program is permitted, subject to conditions outlined in the Enrolment Procedure and receiving approval from the Program Director or their nominee. Readmission A student who has discontinued enrolment in the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics program and who is not on an approved leave of absence is required to seek approval for readmission to the program from the Program Director, Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics or nominee. Readmission to the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics program is not guaranteed and subject to availability of clinical placements Student story Heidi Neil Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours) "As a dietitian, Heidi addresses the nutrition and dietary needs of patients with various conditions. "I provide nutrition support, education and counselling. I loved studying at Griffith, including undertaking 20 weeks of professional placement, where I applied my knowledge in diverse healthcare settings, making my transition into a graduate position much smoother." Work-integrated learning You will spend time in the work/professional environment undertaking placements at various locations. Placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan/Gold Coast area and (by negotiation) interstate or overseas. You will undertake a minimum of 100 days (800 hours) of professional placement; 15 days (120 hours) in the third year of the program, with the remainder in the fourth year of the Program. All professional placements are under the supervision of a qualified dietitian with Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) credentials in a range of sectors including hospitals, residential aged care facilities, the community (government or non-government organisations) or private businesses.
