About This Course

The Bachelor of Human Services offers an employment pathway into contemporary human services contexts. It engages meaningfully with important questions of human experience and develops graduates who are well-equipped to improve society through effective people helping practice. The course emphasises both theory and hands-on experience and develops essential skills in working with diverse groups of people in managing the issues they face in modern society. The course has been developed around hands-on pedagogy and proximity to social services organisations. It offers three specialisation areas: Human Behaviour; Family Support and Child Protection; and Youth Work. Student feedback shows that CHC social sciences students appreciate the professional practice-informed lectures by industry practitioners who teach subjects and offer invited guest lectures in their area of expertise.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Applicants who have completed secondary education in the last two years and who are aged 17 years or over are eligible for admission.
Applicants with VET study of at least a completed Certificate III (with a GPA of at least 4.0, where applicable) and who are aged 17 years or over are eligible.
Applicants with completed higher education study, or at least one semester (full-time equivalent) of higher education study who wish to transfer, are eligible.
Applicants with work and life experience who demonstrate readiness for higher education, including successful completion of the Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT), are eligible.
Assumed knowledge: English (Units 3 and 4, C).
A Suitability Card is required for practicum purposes in selected majors; refer to institution.
English language proficiency: Applicants for whom English is not their first language must provide evidence that their secondary or tertiary studies were conducted in English, or provide results from an acceptable English Language Proficiency examination no more than two years old.
IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (at least 6.0 in all subtests)
PTE (Academic): 59 overall (at least 51 in all subtests)
TOEFL (PBT): 577
TOEFL (IBT): 90 (at least 16 in Listening, Reading; 21 in Writing; 18 in Speaking)

Career Opportunities

Graduates can work as caseworkers, group facilitators, group workers, planning officers, support workers or carers. Depending on specialisation, they may also work in chaplaincy; community aid and development; community mental health; disability and aged care; family support and child protection; human behaviour; and youth work. Specific roles include personal support worker, family support worker, pastoral carer, child protection officer, case manager, and youth worker.
