Common Questions
To be considered for admission, you must have completed a bachelor degree or higher, or a major in a related discipline, with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65 in third year units (or final year units where relevant). You must also meet the English language proficiency requirements, such as an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no band score less than 6.0, or a VCE English study score of at least 30 (EAL) or 25 (other English). Additionally, applicants are required to submit an honours project preference form as part of their application.
The Bachelor of Public Health and Health Promotion (Honours) is 1 year full-time or part-time equivalent. Students should be able to commit 35 hours per week to their honours degree. Note that the Semester 2 intake is part-time only.
To complete the degree, you must pass 8 credit points. In Semester 1, you will study Research Methods (HBS400) and Developing Research Skills (HSH401), as well as the compulsory zero-credit-point unit Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin (DAI001). In Semester 2, you will complete the Honours Research Project (HSH402), which is worth 4 credit points and involves an independent research project.
Graduates can pursue career opportunities in government and private sector roles across Australia and internationally. Roles include community development coordinator, health policy developer, health promotion officer, health researcher, program development coordinator, program evaluator, social planning officer, and women's health officer. Employment areas include chronic illness, healthy eating, mental health, physical activity, social inclusion, and women's health. The honours year also acts as a pathway to undertaking a masters or doctoral research program.
Graduates from the Bachelor of Public Health and Health Promotion may be eligible to become members of the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) and the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA).
