About This Course

This pathway offers you the skills, knowledge and experience to become a secondary school STEM teacher. This combined undergraduate and postgraduate degree, the only one of its kind in WA, provides you with in-depth knowledge of the theory and practical skills required for secondary school teaching in STEM subjects. Your subject area expertise, coupled with a teaching qualification, will see you thrive in the global knowledge society.

80 ATAR (2026 intake)
Satisfactory personal statement
Final scaled mark of 50 in Mathematics Applications ATAR
Note: Depending on your chosen major/s, there may be additional prerequisite subjects
Students without a final scaled mark of 50 in Mathematics Applications ATAR should consider applying for the Assured Pathway to Teaching
To transfer into this course, a minimum WAM of 65 is required
Higher English Language Competency (ELC) requirement in accordance with the requirements of the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia:
- A final year 12 school grade of C or scaled mark of 50 in English ATAR or Literature ATAR or English as an Additional Language/Dialect ATAR or equivalent from Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States of America; OR
- A valid IELTS Academic overall score of at least 7.5, a minimum score of 7.0 in the Reading and Writing bands, and a minimum score of 8.0 in the Listening and Speaking bands; OR
- A valid Pearson Test of English (PTE) (Academic) overall score of at least 75 and no sub-score less than 70; OR
- A valid Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) overall grade of B or above, with a score of 'exceptional' for listening and speaking, and at least 'good' for reading and writing
An English bridging course is not regarded as evidence of English Language Competence

Career Opportunities

As a graduate of this course, you will be able to work in government and independent schools, both nationally and internationally. This course will enable you to teach two secondary school (years 7–12) STEM subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Physical Education and Human Biology. Your degree could also open up opportunities within government agencies, not-for-profit organisations or community services. A nationwide shortage of qualified STEM teachers within WA and across Australia means graduates are highly sought after.

What majors can I choose in the Bachelor of Science component of this degree?

Within the Bachelor of Science, you can choose to major in: Anatomy and Human Biology, Chemistry, Marine Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Psychological and Behavioural Sciences, or Sport Science. Your chosen major will form the basis of your subject area expertise as a secondary school STEM teacher.

How is the course structured across the four years?

In your first three years, you will complete the Bachelor of Science, in addition to four units of postgraduate study. The Master of Teaching is taught on a school-term basis, and you will start taking postgraduate units in term 1 of your third year of study. In your final year, you'll complete the remaining units in the Master of Teaching (Secondary).

How much time will I spend on professional placement in schools?

As part of your degree, you will spend at least 13 weeks in two different school environments in your final year. This will provide you with the skills and experience to form effective working relationships and develop your professional experience in teaching, under the mentoring of current STEM teachers.

Is the Master of Teaching component of this course professionally accredited?

Yes. The Master of Teaching - Secondary (32550) is accredited by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA). Graduates of the program will meet the qualification requirements for Provisional Registration with the TRBWA, allowing them to teach in government, independent, or Catholic education school systems.

How many ATAR curriculum areas will I be qualified to teach after completing this course?

Study plans will be constructed to ensure you qualify to teach two ATAR curriculum areas up to Year 12. The course focuses on school-based practice, curriculum area skills and contemporary best practice to prepare you for a career across government, independent or Catholic education school systems.
