Year 1 commences at the City campus and transitions to some subjects at the Bundoora campus in the second half of the year. Years 2 and 3 are at the Bundoora campus. Year 4 is partially at Bundoora, with the rest of the subject locations dependent on your selection.
In Year 1 you'll study foundation subjects in human biology, cell biology, genetics, animals, chemistry and statistics, along with microbiology and immunology. Year 2 broadens your knowledge of microbiology, biochemistry and genetics, and introduces molecular biology, physiology, and developmental cell biology. Year 3 covers medical microbiology, cellular communication, statistics and epidemiology, bioinformatics, and immunology. In Year 4 you'll master techniques such as gene transfer, microarrays, and real-time DNA analysis, with electives available in anatomy, neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, pharmaceutical science, industrial microbiology and applied biochemistry.
Graduates qualify to apply for professional membership of The Australian Society for Microbiology and The Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
You'll get to work on research projects and practical activities, often undertaken in collaboration with industry. The final-year Science Project subject involves either an industry placement or the opportunity to work on an industry-related project. In the Practical Biomedical Sciences subject, you'll have further opportunities to undertake a work-placement and receive feedback and guidance from industry professionals.
The minimum ATAR (lowest selection rank to which an offer was made, including consideration of any adjustments) for current and recent Year 12 applicants is 75.50. Entry is competitive, and eligible applicants are ranked and selected in order of merit based on their academic achievement plus any adjustment factors, up to a maximum of 28 aggregate adjustment points.
