This course is fully accredited by Engineers Australia, and graduates are eligible for graduate membership of Engineers Australia. As Australia is one of 15 countries signatory to the Washington Accord, the qualification is recognised in all signatory countries. All graduates will also be eligible for membership of the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand.
In the final year of the program, students choose a minor study in either environmental biology, environmental chemistry, or groundwater engineering.
Yes. In order to graduate, students must complete 12 weeks of engineering industry experience, which allows them to gain experience in an engineering environment under the supervision of a practising engineer. Opportunities also exist for an overseas work placement of between six and 12 months, which can satisfy this engineering industry requirement.
Yes. There are opportunities to undertake international study tours to Paris to explore sustainable cities, to study China's environmental challenges, and to take part in a sustainability project in Vietnam. Students may also undertake a team research project in Vietnam or China. RMIT also offers exchange and study experiences with over 165 partner universities worldwide.
Year 1 concentrates on fundamentals in environmental science, chemistry, biology and engineering mathematics. Year 2 covers the hydrosphere, ecology, soil environment, groundwater studies and multidisciplinary engineering projects. Year 3 introduces the atmosphere, minor study courses in environmental biology or environmental chemistry, and environmental engineering studies in urban water systems. Year 4 completes minor studies and further develops understanding of urban water systems, economics, wastewater treatments and land contamination. Year 5 focuses on advanced environmental sampling and analysis, ethics, policies and law, and work-integrated learning opportunities.
