The Bachelor of Secondary Education offers the following majors: Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, English, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Modern History, and Physics. Most majors can also be undertaken with an approved minor in order to pursue eligibility for a NESA second teaching area.
This course requires a total of 560 hours of compulsory placements over 16 weeks (at 35 hours per week). Each student must complete placements in at least two different schools. Students must also complete a Working with Children Check and obtain clearance prior to attending Professional Experience.
Domestic students must apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). The UAC codes vary by major: Biology (755104), Chemistry (755105), Earth & Environmental Science (755106), Health and Physical Education (755101), Mathematics (755102), and Physics (755107). Current high school students may also apply via Early Admission through the UOW Early Admission website, typically during June–August each year. The UAC Early Bird application deadline for Autumn 2026 is 30 September 2025, and the final round deadline is 30 January 2026.
Yes, the Bachelor of Secondary Education is accredited and recognised as a national professional teaching qualification. However, students seeking work outside NSW or Australia are advised to check with potential employers and other teacher registration authorities for any additional requirements. UOW is also committed to supporting students to meet the accreditation requirements to teach in Catholic Diocesan schools.
As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week, which includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor in more time for examination study, practical work, and placements. Part-time students' study hours will vary based on the number of units taken, with similar expectations for class and independent study.
