About This Course

The University of Notre Dame Australia's Bachelor of Secondary Education degree qualifies graduates to educate students in Australian Catholic, independent and government secondary schools. The four-year degree, with flexible full-time or part-time study options, combines theory, skill development and 30 weeks of school-based practical experience across two chosen teaching areas.

The program provides both the subject-area content knowledge students will teach and the skills and experience in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment needed to teach effectively, integrating theory and practice throughout. Teaching areas available include English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Science, Drama, and (at Sydney only) Ancient/Modern History, Business Studies, Economics and Legal Studies, or (at Fremantle only) Philosophy & Ethics and Religion and Life.

Students must meet all 37 descriptors of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers on their final internship and pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) before their final-year internship. The program is accredited by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia, qualifying graduates for registration in any Australian state or territory.

How much practical experience will I complete during the degree?

Students in the Bachelor of Secondary Education are required to complete a minimum of 30 weeks of practicum, comprised of a 10-day observation in EDUC1040 Development and Learning, Professional Experience 2 – Secondary, Professional Experience 3 – Secondary, and a Professional Engagement and Internship – Secondary in the final year.

What checks and clearances do I need before going on professional placement?

WA students require a current Working with Children Check and a National Police Clearance Check within six months of expiry. NSW students require Anaphylaxis E-training, Child Protection Awareness, DoE Consent, Mandatory Child Protection, Pre-service teacher acknowledgement, and a Working with Children Check. Both WA and NSW students must also complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) before the Internship in the final year.

What are the entry requirements for WA applicants applying through secondary education?

WA applicants with recent secondary education need an indicative ATAR/Selection Rank of 70 (including Adjustment Factors) or an International Baccalaureate (IB) score of 25.
