Bachelor of Social Work

Through a mix of world-class research and theory, Western's Bachelor of Social Work gives you the valuable skills and knowledge you need to help people deal with personal and social problems, either directly or by planning and carrying out programs that will benefit groups or communities. It prepares you to enter the workforce in a range of sectors, including private or government agencies, welfare support organisations, community groups or in health. In addition to social research and theory, this program emphasises practical skills to make you job-ready by undertaking more than 1,000 hours of supervised field work. As a result, you will graduate with confidence in your abilities, and highly sought-after workplace skills as a professional social worker. The Bachelor of Social Work is a four-year degree that is fully accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers. As a graduate, you will be prepared for work across diverse practice areas including case work, group work, community development, policy and research. You will study traditional academic units as well as gaining real-world practice by completing 1000 hours of supervised assessed placements. The Bachelor of Community Welfare (exit) degree is available after three years of study in the Bachelor of Social Work. This includes 400 hours of on-site supervised practice and will equip you to work in a range of professions with a particular emphasis on community development and social action.
