About This Course

The Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences equips students with a comprehensive and evidence-based understanding of linguistics – the scientific study of human communication –, with a focus on speech, hearing, and language sciences. This interdisciplinary degree integrates theoretical knowledge with technical and analytical skills. Students will explore how language is structured, produced, perceived, and understood, with a strong focus on the diversity of human communication across the lifespan and across cultures. Through studies in phonetics, syntax, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, hearing, child language development, and communication disorders, students will develop a critical and culturally responsive perspective on language and communication. A key feature of this course is its foundation in research-led teaching, supported by access to one of the world’s most advanced clinical and research environments in speech, hearing, and language sciences. Graduates of this course will be well prepared for a career across a diverse range of settings, including clinical administration/management/marketing, journalism, language revitalisation and language support in Indigenous communities, linguistic/language support work for NGOs, business or multicultural communities and other organisations. Alternatively, graduates can pursue further studies to become a Speech Pathologist, Audiologist, Applied Linguist, Forensic Linguist, Speech Technology Expert, or speech, hearing or language sciences researcher.

Career Opportunities

The Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences provides students with skills and knowledge that prepares them for further training or for a variety of language related career opportunities.
Students interested in applying their speech and language knowledge to clinical practice can do so by completing our Master of Speech and Language Pathology.
Students interested in expanding and applying their knowledge in hearing, and its disorders by pursuing a clinical career in Audiology can do so by completing our Master of Clinical Audiology.
Students who wish to pursue a research career, possibly leading to an academic or industry role, may consider doing a Master of Research, and qualified students may follow this with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a very wide range of possible research topics relevant to the interests and expertise of academics in the Department of Linguistics.
Some students may wish to undertake further study in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) through our Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL) or Forensic Speech Science or Speech Technology.
In addition, this degree can lead to employment in:
Public service (at all levels including local, state and federal), especially in departments involved in support for migrant populations, bilingual/multilingual speakers, and in the disability sector
Non government organisations supporting refugees, migrants and bilingual/multilingual speakers, and the disability sector
Organisations involved in research, development, clinical support, and/or marketing of speech, language and hearing related devices/services for augmentative or alternative communication
Organisations involved in computer mediated communication, for instance, natural language processing and other areas where linguistic knowledge is deemed essential in an increasingly electronic communicative world
Organisations supporting Indigenous language revitalisation efforts and literacy programs.
Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences graduates are eligible for Accreditation with the Australian Linguistic Society.
