Common Questions
You must have successfully completed an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in textile design or equivalent with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 (out of 4.0). Secondary education (Year 12), VET study, and work and life experience are not considered for entry into this program.
All applicants must complete and submit a selection task. For domestic students applying for Semester 1, 2027, selection task details and submission dates will be available early August 2026. International students must submit: (1) a folio of up to 10 pages in PDF format showcasing creative textiles design projects; (2) four written applicant statements of up to 100 words each covering your planned investigation, career aspirations, research interests, and relevant skills; and (3) a video of no longer than 3 minutes in which you introduce yourself and describe one project in detail.
The degree is offered as a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), with a 2026 total indicative fee of AU$47,040. The annual student contribution amount for a standard full-time year ranges from AU$4,738 to AU$17,399 depending on the band of the subjects enrolled. The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is up to AU$373 for 2026. Eligible students may defer tuition fees through HECS-HELP and SSAF through SA-HELP. This course is not available to international students intending to study on a student visa.
The next intake is February (Semester 1). This degree is not available for midyear (Semester 2) application. For Semester 1, 2027, applications through VTAC or direct to RMIT open from 3 August 2026. Selection task details for Semester 1, 2027 will be available early August 2026.
The degree runs for one year full-time. In Semester 1, you complete two core subjects and one fashion and textiles elective designed to develop your foundation for further study. In Semester 2, you undertake two core subjects: a design project linked with a research project. The program code is BH124, located at Melbourne City Campus (CRICOS: 096891K). The degree utilises research-enabled subjects, a project-led model, and independently-designed projects in specific industry contexts.
Graduates occupy significant positions in creative industries in Australia and internationally. Possible careers include textile and digital textile designer and artist, materials/knitwear/print designer, product designer, colour and trim designer for automotive, colour and trend forecaster, illustrator, freelance designer, stationary designer, and carpet/rug/surface/upholstery fabric/wallpaper designer. Upon completion, you may also be eligible for entry into an RMIT Postgraduate or Research degree.
