Common Questions
The Bachelor of Vision Science alone does not qualify you to practise as an optometrist. If you want to become a practising optometrist, you'll need to complete the Master of Clinical Optometry before registering with the Australian Optometry Board. When you complete the Bachelor of Vision Science, you may be eligible to apply for the Master of Clinical Optometry, though places are limited in the master's program and entry can be very competitive.
You'll apply your knowledge through Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and Research Integrated Learning (RIL) opportunities, including work placements, internships and global exchange opportunities. These experiences allow you to explore different career paths and apply your skills professionally while being guided by world-leading academics. In your third year, you'll apply your knowledge through research and learn how vision science is used in real-world environments.
The 2026 lowest selection rank (ATAR plus adjustment factors) is 90.0, with the lowest ATAR before adjustment factors being 83.95. Assumed knowledge includes Chemistry, English Advanced, Mathematics Advanced and Physics. International students need an International ATAR of 87.0, an IB Diploma score of 33.0, or equivalent qualifications. A range of adjustment factor schemes are available, including HSC Plus (up to 5 points), Elite Athletes Performers and Leaders (up to 5 points), and the Educational Access Scheme (1 to 10 points).
Graduates can work across a wide range of areas including clinical support (optical assistant, ophthalmic assistant, vision screener), research and labs (research assistant, laboratory technician, clinical trials assistant), optical dispensing and tech, imaging and diagnostics, public health and promotion, education and training, policy and government, rehabilitation and support, and paediatric eye care. Starting salaries for entry-level roles average around $53,000, while policy officers can earn upwards of $100,000 with experience. The sector is growing by about 3% each year (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025).
UNSW's Medicine & Health faculty is ranked #54 globally for life sciences and medicine (QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2026). Students have access to the Centre for Eye Health, Brien Holden Vision Institute and Optometry Giving Sight. UNSW Optometry and Vision Science is the largest school of optometry in Australia, and is committed to translational research that leads to practical application and significant improvements in ocular health.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
