About This Course

If you're creative and want to pursue your artistic passion, La Trobe's Bachelor of Visual Arts will give you the knowledge, experiences and connections to realise your dream career. Gain valuable skills in a range of visual mediums, then dive into your art practice with access to our purpose-built studios and workshops.

Develop your art practice in a professional environment. Access specialised facilities including painting and drawing studios, a digital lighting studio, photographic darkrooms, and sculpture and printmaking workshops. You'll also get your own personal studio space from day one of your degree – right through to graduation – where you can hone your skills and collaborate with other artists.

Gain insights into what contemporary art can tell us about the world and our place within it. Discover how the arts contribute to the significant historical, cultural, ecological and ethical issues of our time and gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between art and other visual cultures such as fashion, film and design.

General Requirements

Domestic students:

Recent secondary education (Year 12)

This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection considerations.

VCE: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

HSC: One of English Standard, English Advanced (Band 2), English as an Additional Language or Dialect (Band 3).

Selection rank adjustments

VCE: A study score of 25 in Product Design And Technology, Studio Arts, Theatre Studies or Visual Communication Design equals 4 aggregate points per study. A study score of 20 in any LOTE equals 4 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 12 points

HSC: Applicants who successfully complete one of the following HSC or equivalent Year 12 subjects will have their selection rank increased by one point per study: Performance Band 3 in Design and Technology, Drama or Visual Arts; any language other than English (Band 2). Overall, selection ranks can be increased by a maximum of five points.

Higher education, VET and work/life experience applicants

Subject proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Applicants can complete and submit a Personal Statement if they wish other information to be considered during the selection process. This may include information such as work or community experience or reasons for applying. Applicants may wish to provide other documentation in support of their application.
You may satisfy the academic requirements by completing the STAT multiple choice if you:
- are not currently studying an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent)
- have no prior secondary school (Year 12), VET studies, HE studies or relevant work experience that can be considered for entry, or
- do not meet the minimum academic requirements for the program. Refer to the La Trobe University STAT page page for further information.
Applicants who have undertaken studies in a language other than English must demonstrate that they have achieved the required minimum scores in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic) or equivalent. Refer to Language requirements for further information.
Screen, Theatre and Writing: A study score of 25 in Art, Drama, any Humanities, Legal Studies, Psychology, Studio Arts, Theatre Studies or Visual Communication Design equals 4 aggregate points per study.
