About This Course

As a candidate you may continue to work in the area of your undergraduate study or undertake research in a different area. You can nominate to study by either studio practice and research paper or by dissertation. You are expected to have developed a focus and direction in your work and be prepared for working in a tutorial environment with a supervisor. The honours year in the Bachelor of Visual Arts may be undertaken in the following areas: ceramics, glass, jewellery and object, painting, photomedia, printmedia, screen arts and sculpture, or by dissertation only.

Requirements

You must present a research proposal outlining the proposed topic of your investigation and submit a portfolio of recent artwork.
Applicants must nominate a mode of research: by studio practice and research paper; or by dissertation.
Applicants are also selected on the basis of their portfolio and project proposal.
Admission is competitive and not all eligible applicants may be offered candidature.
Please note students who have completed a major in Visual Arts are ineligible for this Honours program.
You may need to arrange a supervisor before you apply.
Pre-approval of your topic doesn't guarantee entry to the honours program, you will still need to meet the other eligibility requirements.

What are the final assessment requirements for the Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours)?

At the end of honours year you are required to present a 5,000–7,000-word research paper and a substantial exhibition, performance or installation of artwork; or alternatively a 15,000-word dissertation.

Applications close on 15 January of the commencing year for Semester 1 entry. Applications are made directly to the University of Sydney and assessed by the Faculty. The University strongly encourages applicants to apply as early as possible, as offers are made on a rolling basis and places are limited.
