Operate basic machinery and equipment
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain machinery and equipment.
Recognise plants
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise commonly encountered plants, including desired species and weeds, and to document and confirm plant identification.
Plant trees and shrubs
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to manually plant trees and shrubs and other containerised and bare-rooted plants, including preparing, inspecting and planting trees and shrubs and completing planting work.
Treat weeds
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise significant weed species and apply a range of weed treatment control options.
Treat plant pests, diseases and disorders
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to treat plant pests, diseases and disorders.
Assist with soil or growing media sampling and testing

Maintain chainsaws
This unit of competency describes the knowledge and skills required to maintain fuel or electrically powered hand-held chainsaws. The unit includes completing routine maintenance service as well as periodic maintenance servicing and chain sharpening.
Trim and cut felled trees
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to trim and cut felled trees with a chainsaw, and complete operator maintenance. For the purpose of this unit of competency, a felled tree is any tree or part thereof, including, but not limited to, a tree trunk, branch or limb that has fallen or has been felled and is laying on the ground in a bushland, plantation, forested or other setting, including parkland, roadways and urban areas.

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to shift materials safely using manual handling methods.
Common Questions
Yes, you must already be employed to enrol as an apprentice or trainee with TAFE Queensland. You should speak to your employer about choosing TAFE Queensland as your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).
Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a set fee per nominal hour, calculated at a regulated rate of $1.60 per nominal hour. Concession rates apply for students who hold a current Health Care Card or who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost, which will be confirmed prior to the commencement of training.
The Certificate II in Horticulture is available at multiple locations across Queensland, including Ashmore (Gold Coast), Nambour (Sunshine Coast), Toowoomba (Darling Downs and South West), Bundaberg and Hervey Bay (Wide Bay Burnett), and Cairns (North Queensland).
After submitting your application, you will be invited to complete a Skills Check to help determine if the course is right for you. The recommended benchmark levels are 2 in English, 2 in Maths, and 2 in Digital Technology. To study via the traineeship pathway, you must be indentured as a trainee with your employer, and your employer must be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources.
After completing the Certificate II in Horticulture, you can further advance or enhance your career options by undertaking the Certificate III in Horticulture, which will qualify you to work in nurseries and parks and gardens. TAFE Queensland also offers university pathway options, where completing certain diplomas may give you a full year of credit towards a degree with a partner university.
