About This Course

This qualification reflects the role of a security officer responsible for maintaining safety and security by patrolling, protecting, or guarding property while unarmed, and screening entry, monitoring behaviour and removing persons from premises. Security officers may work alone or work in a team environment under general supervision, operating with limited autonomy and judgement to complete routine but variable tasks, with some accountability and responsibility for their own outputs, work and learning.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Students must be over 18 years of age before commencing studies (it is a licensing requirement)
Person must not have been convicted of a disqualifying offence in the last 10 years
English Requirements: Prospective learners who are not exempt must have achieved minimum scores in the last 3 years:
- IELTS: 6.0 (or 5.0 with at least 10 weeks ELICOS, or 4.5 with at least 20 weeks ELICOS)
- TOEFL internet-based: 60 (or 35 with 10 weeks ELICOS, or 32 with 20 weeks ELICOS)
- Cambridge English Advanced: 169 (or 154 with 10 weeks ELICOS, or 147 with 20 weeks ELICOS)
- PTE Academic: 46 (or 36 with 10 weeks ELICOS, or 30 with 20 weeks ELICOS)
- Occupational English Test: B for each test component
English test not required if: citizen/passport holder from UK, USA, Canada, NZ or Republic of Ireland; Foreign Affairs or Defence sponsored student; completed at least 5 years' study in English in Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa or Republic of Ireland; or completed Senior Secondary Certificate or AQF Certificate IV+ in Australia in English within the last 2 years on a student visa
LLN Requirements: All students must undertake and satisfactorily complete VCI's LLN Test (written test and interview) conducted by a qualified assessor on Orientation day
Minimum ACSF entry levels: Oral Communication Level 2, Learning Level 3, Writing Level 2, Reading Level 2, Numeracy Level 2

What are the total fees for the CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations?

The total fees for the course are: Tuition Fee AUD $1,500, Enrolment Fee AUD $300, and Resource Fee AUD $200. The Resource Fee ensures students receive printed notes, learning materials, and access to Wi-Fi for the duration of their course.

How will I be assessed throughout the course?

All units of competence will be assessed using a selection of tools including observation, case scenarios, verbal questions and answers, written assessment, and practical demonstration/role play.

How many units do I need to complete to receive the Certificate II in Security Operations?

In order to gain the certificate, 14 units must be completed for this qualification, all of which are core units covering areas such as communication, legal procedures, WHS, risk assessment, defensive tactics, patrolling, screening, crowd control, and first aid.

What payment methods are accepted for course fees?

You can pay via cash or EFTPOS in person at VCI's campus, credit card (Visa or MasterCard) via PayPal on the student invoice (a 2% surcharge applies), bank draft or money order payable to 'Vocational Careers Institute', or electronic bank transfer (Telegraphic Transfer) from an overseas bank account to Commonwealth Bank BSB: 064 000.

Is this qualification required for licensing as a security officer in Queensland?

Yes, successful completion of CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations is a mandatory requirement for licensing under the Security Providers Act in Queensland. Additionally, applicants must be over 18 years of age and must not have been convicted of a disqualifying offence in the last 10 years to be considered an 'Appropriate Person' eligible for a licence.
