Certificate II in Security Operations

This qualification reflects the role of a security officer, responsible for maintaining safety and security by patrolling, protecting or guarding property while unarmed, and screening entry, monitoring behaviour and removing persons from premises. It is intended to align with the occupational licensing outcomes of a security agent with crowd control or general guarding security officer, and licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements apply. The course comprises 14 units of competency — 7 core and 7 electives. Core studies cover applying effective communication skills to maintain security, applying legal and procedural requirements to work effectively within a security team, applying WHS, emergency response and evacuation procedures, applying risk assessment to select and carry out responses to security risk situations, providing quality services to a range of security clients, protecting self and others using basic defensive techniques, and patrolling premises to monitor property. Electives extend into screening people, personal effects and items, monitoring and controlling access and exit of persons and vehicles, managing individual and crowd behaviour, applying security procedures to manage intoxicated persons and to remove persons from premises, escorting and protecting persons and valuables, and providing first aid. The course runs over 10 weeks in a classroom setting at Xceed's campus at 6 Eton Road, Keswick, South Australia, with some training conducted via Zoom and online. Security officers may work alone or in a team under general supervision, with employment pathways including security officer, general unarmed guard, crowd controller, and control room or monitoring centre operator.
