This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use any type of sewing machine to align and sew pattern pieces and sew components of textile products. It includes the ability to align and sew straight seams, join flat pieces of stable fabric and use basic stitching.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and appropriately handle woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics and other textile materials and accessories used in the textiles, clothing and footwear industries. Accessories may include items such as threads, fastening and trims.

It has a focus on the protocols, channels and tools used in the design and production environment and requires the ability to use verbal, written and visual communication methods.

Modify patterns
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to make simple modifications to existing patterns for textile products. Textile products may be apparel or other non-wearable items. Types of modifications may include adding opening or closure, lengthening or shortening, adding seams and applying pockets.
Produce technical drawings of garments
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create technical drawings that are accurate, symmetrical and to scale and accurate based on garment design documentation. Technical drawings are used to support the design and production process and may be created using manual or computer-aided techniques.
Develop patterns using basic patternmaking principles
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to interpret design specifications for textile products and use patternmaking principles to develop and test patterns to confirm specifications. Textile products may include apparel or non-wearable items.
Sew garments
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to sew complete garments that include multiple pieces, involving the use of sewing techniques where the positioning, feeding and handling of work pieces involves discretionary changes, contouring or critical stopping points and/or special handling skills required to accommodate fabric variations. Garments may include shirts, trousers, dresses, unstructured jackets, stretch knits and skirts.
Embellish textile products
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select and use embellishing techniques for textile products either during or at the end of production. Products may be apparel or non-wearable items. Embellishments may be added by hand or machine.
Market textile products to local outlets
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify local market opportunities for products, determine approaches for product pricing and promotion, and develop a process for the review of marketing outcomes.
Use digital design tools
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create designs and production specifications for any type of textile product using digital software programs and peripherals. The focus of the unit is the technical skills and knowledge skills and knowledge required to use software to manipulate design elements.
Set up, adjust and maintain industrial sewing machines
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to set up industrial sewing machines for production, conducting sample runs, problem solving, repair, adjustment, preventative routine maintenance and testing of machines to ensure efficient working order.

Graduates of the Certificate III in Apparel, Fashion and Textiles are qualified to work in roles such as Fashion Design Assistant, Dressmaker, Production Assistant, Textile Assistant, Machine Operator, Sustainable Practice Assistant, and Cutter/Laying. According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as fashion, industrial and jewellery designers is expected to grow very strongly and likely to reach over 3,000 job opportunities in the next five years.

Yes, completion of the Certificate III in Apparel, Fashion and Textiles gives you direct entry into the Diploma of Apparel, Fashion and Textiles qualification. From there, you can choose to progress into industry specialisations, including Business Styling or Design and product development.
The course is delivered on campus at Mt Gravatt (Greater Brisbane), Mooloolaba (Sunshine Coast), and South Bank (Greater Brisbane, TAFE at School only). All options are 100% on campus with teacher-led, scheduled classes. You may also access learning materials through TAFE Queensland's online learning management system, Connect.
Students have access to custom-built fashion facilities including a lab fitted out with various industrial sewing machines, irons and cutting tables. Pattern making studios and lecture rooms feature both communal tables and individual cubicles where students will have access to the latest digital design software. The facilities are designed to encourage hands-on, collaborative work.
