Common Questions
The course runs for 72 weeks in total, comprising 51 weeks of delivery plus 10 weeks of holidays, delivered over 61 weeks of course duration. Students are required to attend a minimum of 20 hours per week of study to deliver the required volume of learning of 1,224 hours.
International students must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or a PTE score of 52 or its equivalent. For equivalency of various English language proficiency testing and other forms of equivalency, students should refer to the Enrolment Policy and Procedure available on the Melbourne Trades College website or the MTC Student Handbook online.
Assessment usually commences once training has begun. As this is a competency-based program, assessment continues throughout the program until the participant either achieves competency in the assessment tasks or a further training need is identified and addressed. Students will be required to perform in a range of assessment tasks including knowledge questions in the form of written assessments and being observed demonstrating assessment tasks. The course includes 182 hours of theory assessment and 420 hours of practical assessment.
Practical training takes place at automotive workshops located at 73 Ashley Street, Braybrook, Victoria 3019 and 4/64 Macaulay Street, Williamstown, Victoria 3016. Melbourne Trades College offers a well-equipped, modern facility, a fleet of late model vehicles, and extensive hands-on training that gives students the chance to use the latest equipment currently used to diagnose and repair vehicles.
Upon successful completion of the course, a nationally recognised qualification is issued. Possible job titles include Automotive Heavy Diesel Fuel Technician and Diesel Engine Technician. Students may also choose to progress with further studies by undertaking AUR40216 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis or AUR50116 Diploma of Automotive Management.
