Age requirements

• Students must be above 18 years of age at the time of completing the application form.

Pre-Training Review (PTR)

• A Pre-Training Review is conducted prior to enrolment to ensure the training and assessment provided by Royal Building Academy meets the individual needs of the student. Students complete the PTR form, which is included as part of the Application Form.
• RBA reviews each student's current competencies, individual needs, English language proficiency, digital literacy, support requirements and oral communication skills to determine the most appropriate course for the student.
• The PTR is used to identify and arrange any necessary academic, digital, English language or wellbeing support; to check that the student's responses align with their educational and future goals; to determine whether additional support or guidance is necessary; and to evaluate whether the student has sufficient understanding of essential course information to make an informed enrolment decision.

English Language Requirements — International students

• International students applying for this course, either offshore or onshore, require a minimum IELTS test score of 6.0 or equivalent for direct entry into the VET course; or
• an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent, with an ELICOS course (up to 10 weeks) to be taken before the main VET course; or
• an IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent, with an ELICOS course (up to 20 weeks) to be taken before the main VET course; or
• an Oxford Placement Test score of 61 or higher.
• Note: results older than two years are not acceptable.

Academic Requirements

• Applicants should have successfully completed Year 12, or secondary studies in the applicant's home country equivalent to the Australian senior secondary school examination; or
• Mature-age applicants will also be considered without the minimum education requirements, provided they have relevant work experience within the chosen area of study and a demonstrated capacity to meet the course requirements. A minimum of 2 years' experience would normally be expected; however, each case is reviewed individually, with relevant work experience evidence in the form of an employment reference letter on company letterhead, work samples and a curriculum vitae. Such learners will be assessed for possible RPL opportunities, and their course duration and volume of learning adjusted accordingly if any RPL is granted.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) Skills Test

• Students must possess sound language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills, as these are essential for completing course-related tasks, assessments, communication and navigating digital learning platforms.
• All prospective students are required to undertake an LLND skills assessment prior to enrolment, conducted using the ACSF-mapped online assessment tool LLN Robot.
• Required level for this qualification: MSF30322 Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology — ACSF Level 3
• Students must achieve the expected performance level for this qualification. Where a student does not meet the required LLND benchmark, appropriate LLND support will be provided.

Computer literacy requirements

• All students enrolling in this course must have basic computer skills, and are required to answer the questions relating to computer and internet skills in the Pre-Training Review form provided with the application form.
• Students who do not possess basic computing skills will be provided with basic computer use support.

Materials and equipment required

• RBA provides access to computers with the required resources, including internet access, during classroom hours. For self-study, all learners are expected to have access to a laptop or computer running Windows 7 or higher, and to MS Office applications such as Microsoft Word and an email platform.
• Learners are required to have a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kit for cabinet making. This includes enclosed steel-capped safety boots (heavy leather uppers and heavy-duty soles conforming to AS2210), clear protective safety glasses meeting Australian standards, a safety vest (neon/glowing), protective gloves, earmuffs conforming to AS 1269 or 1270, working uniform or protective clothing (long heavy cotton drill trousers and cotton drill shirt), dust masks and a hard hat. The PPE kit is required to enter the workshop and to be able to undertake training effectively.

Physical Abilities Requirements Learners are expected to have physical abilities and manual handling capacity as part of this qualification, which includes:

• Ability to be on your feet for extended periods of time, both walking and standing, bending, and maintaining consistent physical performance throughout the day
• Ability to work in various environments (e.g. changing conditions, both hot and cool conditions, low light, indoors/outdoors)
• Capacity to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (e.g. masks when preparing cabinets, assembling furnishing components)
• Fine motor skills, including the ability to undertake precisely coordinated movements of the hands (e.g. pushing, pressing, turning, pinching, squeezing, tensioning)
• Manual handling techniques (e.g. lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing)
• Ability to manually operate machinery and equipment (e.g. hand tools, portable electric tools)
• Tolerance to dust, strong machinery noise, wooden particles and chemicals

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer

• RBA recognises qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other Registered Training Organisations in Australia and offers all students the option of Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer. Refer to the Student Handbook for further details.

Pathways from the qualification

• After successfully achieving this qualification, candidates may undertake MSF40222 Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Manufacturing, or any higher qualification that suits the learner's needs from the MSF Furnishing Training Package.
• While Royal Building Academy may not offer all the qualifications indicated within the pathway, RBA identifies relevant progression that may be attained.
