Certificate III in Carpentry

This is a trade qualification for carpenters in residential and commercial workplaces. It includes setting out, manufacturing, constructing, assembling, installing and repairing products made using timber and non-timber materials. Across 34 units of competency students work through the full sequence of a build: carrying out setting out and general demolition, installing flooring systems, constructing and erecting wall frames and ceiling frames, erecting roof trusses, constructing pitched roofs and eaves, installing windows, doors and exterior cladding, constructing timber external stairs, installing lining, panelling and moulding, framing and fitting wet area fixtures, constructing bulkheads, and erecting and dismantling formwork for footings, slabs, suspended slabs, columns, beams and walls. Supporting units cover reading and interpreting plans, specifications and drawings, construction calculations and levelling operations, concreting to simple forms, restricted height scaffolding, working safely at heights, and identifying construction work hazards and selecting risk control strategies. Completion of the general construction induction training program is required by anyone carrying out construction work. The course is delivered over 104 weeks at York Business Institute's Sydney campus, combining face-to-face classes with online study at 20 hours per week. After achieving this qualification candidates may undertake further studies in the related field such as Diploma of Building and Construction.
