Common Questions
The work placement component requires students to complete 48 service periods (192 hours) for the unit SITHCCC043 Work Effectively as a Cook. It is designed to provide students with diverse experiences in a real-world setting under normal commercial pressures, and typically takes place during Term 5 within approximately five weeks. Each service period is approximately four hours. Placements are only conducted in establishments that have been assessed for suitability and have entered into a Practical Placement Agreement or Memorandum of Understanding with Australian School of Business and Trade. An assessor will visit and evaluate the student at least twice during the placement.
The fees for this course are as follows: Course Fee of $9,500, Material Fee of $500, and a non-refundable Enrolment Fee of $250, bringing the total to $10,250.
The course is delivered face to face at the campus located at 131 Queen St – Level 8, Melbourne, VIC 3000 for classroom-based training, and practical training takes place in a commercial training kitchen at 407 Victoria St, Abbotsford VIC 3067. The training kitchen provides learners with a simulated industry environment where learners can achieve knowledge and skills defined in each unit of competency for this qualification.
International students must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent, or have completed a minimum of two (2) years of study at an AQF Level 4 or higher in Australia. For equivalency of various English language proficiency testing and other forms of equivalency, students are referred to the Student Handbook.
After completing the Certificate III in Commercial Cookery, students may continue their education into a range of Certificate IV qualifications, such as the SIT40521 Certificate IV in Kitchen Management. For employment, this qualification provides a pathway to work as a commercial cook in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, clubs, pubs, cafés, and coffee shops, and completion of this qualification contributes to recognition as a trade cook.
