Common Questions
This course is designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from remote areas across Queensland, including communities such as Thursday Island and Torres Strait Outer Islands, Bamaga/Injinoo/Umagico/New Mapoon/Seisia, Napranum/Weipa, Lockhart River, Hope Vale/Cooktown, Pormpuraaw, Normanton, Yarrabah, Woorabinda, and Cherbourg.
The course has three fee options: a Concession fee of $425 (fee concessions may apply for eligible students), a Subsidised fee of $970 (for eligible students accessing government funded courses), and a Full Fee of $5,410 (total course fee). Student loans and payment plans are also available.
TAFE Queensland has dedicated Indigenous Student Support Officers (ISSOs) who provide tailored support including assistance with enrolment processes, Centrelink ABSTUDY enquiries, tutor support, referrals to other community service providers, enrolment into 'away from base' courses, and personal support. Funding support is also available for students who need to travel away from their communities to cover travel, accommodation, and meals.
This qualification is delivered through a compulsory residential program over 18 months, featuring intensive 5-day residential blocks of training on campus. Depending on the campus, the split between online and on-campus study varies — for example, Cairns, Northern Peninsula Area, and Thursday Island campuses are 80% on campus and 20% online, while Palm Island is 60% on campus and 40% online. Students will also be required to undertake 160 hours of vocational placement in an approved setting.
Successful completion of this course allows graduates to seek employment in a range of entry-level early childhood education and care roles, including Out of School Hours Care Assistant, Family Day Care Provider, Early Childhood Education and Care Assistant, and Early Childhood Education and Care Worker. The Australian Government's Job Outlook service indicates the Early Childhood Education and Care industry is experiencing very strong growth, with around 184,000 job openings expected over the next five years.
