About This Course

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who perform a broad range of tasks on a variety of heavy commercial vehicles in the automotive service and repair sector. Domestic students can develop their skills through an Australian Apprenticeship arrangement. This includes a mix of on and off-the-job training that will be specified in the Training Plan associated with the Contract of Training between the employer and apprentice. International students will have the opportunity to complete the program on campus through practical training and assessment and on-the-job placements. Opportunity exists for 18-month post-study work visa. This makes the student job-ready. Existing workers currently employed in the industry may be eligible to complete the program through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Students will develop their skills that are in demand through practical and hands-on work in a simulated workplace environment. They will have the opportunity to learn how to diagnose faults and carry out mechanical repairs to a range of heavy vehicle mechanical components. Students will learn about: Workplace safety in an automotive workplace, Identifying automotive faults, Servicing operations, Diagnostic procedures, Using and maintaining tools, Diagnosing and repairing various heavy vehicle mechanical components and systems – steering, suspension, brakes, hydraulics, fuel injection, engines, emission control systems.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Domestic students can complete through an Australian Apprenticeship arrangement with a mix of on and off-the-job training specified in the Training Plan associated with the Contract of Training between the employer and apprentice.
International students will complete the program on campus through practical training and assessment and on-the-job placements.
Existing workers currently employed in the industry may be eligible to complete the program through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
For RPL, candidates must demonstrate skills towards each unit of competency in the qualification and show work currency to ensure it aligns with current industry standards.
RPL applicants must provide a portfolio of evidence including prior qualifications, employment history, visual evidence, work samples, references, journals and publications, and may be required to complete practical or written/verbal testing.
Compulsory 75% attendance is required for domestic and international students attending face-to-face classes.
QLD Government Subsidised RPL and Gap Training is available to QLD residents only.

What study options are available for this course?

Intech Institute offers a range of study options including full-time on campus (for domestic and international students), full-time on-the-job training (for trade workers only), RPL for existing skills (for those who have worked in the industry), apprenticeships and traineeships (for domestic students only), and QLD Government Subsidised RPL and Gap Training (for QLD residents only).

How much does the course cost for international students?

The course fee for international students is $18,000.00, which includes PPE, training and assessment resources. This fee excludes OSHC, visa fees, and accommodation. A payment plan is available if you have difficulty paying the full fee upfront, allowing you to pay per semester or in monthly instalments.

Can I get credit for my existing skills and work experience?

Yes, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available. RPL is a process of having your knowledge, work experience and skills formally assessed for the purpose of gaining a nationally recognised and accredited qualification. To successfully achieve an RPL, you must be able to demonstrate your skills towards each unit of competency in the qualification and show work currency to ensure it aligns with current industry standards. InTech will provide initial feedback on the RPL at no cost to determine your success rate and any gaps in your skills.

What are the further study progression options after completing this qualification?

Upon completion, students can progress onto the next level of qualification within the college. Intech offers the Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis (AUR40216) and the Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Overhauling (AUR40820), or other relevant qualifications. Credits may also include units of competency contained within relevant skill sets and statements of attainment.

Is work placement available or required as part of the course?

Students are encouraged to seek industry work placement to gain the maximum benefit from the course. This is an opportunity to not only apply and practice the skills acquired in a formal work environment, but to improve their capabilities. InTech may assist in securing industry work placements — conditions apply. Students will receive internship details and a journal, as well as job placement logbooks on their induction/orientation day.
